Indian Motorcycles have officially announced details of the new 'Thunder Stroke 111' that will power their reintroduction to motorcycling with new models expected in 2014.

Indian Motorcycles were acquired by Polaris Industries in April 2011, and the North American company with an excellent pedigree in the ATV, snowmobile and more recently cruiser style motorcycles with the Victory brand.

Polaris is putting a mighty effort behind their stewardship of the Indian brand, America's oldest motorcycle company founded in 1901.

Polaris have strived to capture the essence of Indian with the new 111 cubic inch (1811cc) engine modeled on the design of the company's legendary 1948 Indian Chief.

Indian make no power claims for the new engine at this stage but big cruisers are all about torque, and here they do put their cards on the table with a claim of 'more than 115 ft-lbs (160Nm) of torque' from the 49-degree V-Twin.

The pushrod tubes are clearly, and deliberately, a styling highlight of the engine along with finned heads and a unique shape to the cylinder head covers that is distinctive Indian.

The engine is designed for an idle speed of 800rpm and a maximum engine speed of 5500rpm from the long stroke (113mm) engine.

The bore diameter is 101mm and the pistons push into a 9.5:1 compression ratio.

EFI throttle bodies measure 54mm and with Indian stating that the engine has 'electronic throttle control' we presume this means it will operate via fly-by-wire throttle rather than a direct cable actuation.

Final drive is via carbon-fibre reinforced belt.

Built in Osceola, Wisconsin, the air/oil-cooled, two-valve per cylinder engines with six-speed wet-clutch gearbox will then be transferred to Polaris's production facility in Spirit Lake, Iowa, for installation into the new range of 2014 Indian Motorcycles.
