Since I haven't done a column for a while, I'm going to have to go all the way back to the second round of the AMA series at California Speedway at the beginning of April. The weekend went pretty well for me, I finished 9th on the Formula Extreme bike and I guess that was okay for my first round in the AMA FX series. The 600 supersport race went pretty good for me and I finished 13th, a lot better than Daytona and I'm starting to feel more comfortable on the 600 now. The next round was at Sears Point, in Northern California. That place is a pretty tough track with lots of walls and things around, but the layout was pretty fun. In the Formula Extreme class, it was my first ever time riding the new CBR954 and I was happy to qualify in 7th, before finishing the race in 9th. I was pretty disappointed with my finishing position but I got some good points for the championship. On the 600 I qualified 13th but I could only manage 16th in the race, I wasn't happy at all. Round Four of the series was at Road Atlanta and I was really looking forward to that race. We had some problems with the 954 in Friday practice and Saturday morning was wet and nobody got to ride. As a result, my first track time on the FX bike was in the 20 minute qualifying session. I ended up 10th quickest, only half a second off of 6th so it wasn't so bad. The race was red flagged four times, the highest position I ran in was 5th, but I finished 8th. I'm happy to be improving and the main thing I am focusing on is the start of the race. I'm 6th in the championship now and hopefully get even higher towards the end of the season. I qualified 11th on the 600 and finished in 13th, now I am 11th in the points. The next round is at Pikes Peak in Colorado, my Bruce Transportation Honda team have been working really hard and I'm pretty confident of getting a good result as it's a tight track, and with 29 laps hopefully I can come through up near the front. Away from the racing, I have been having a lot of fun over here. My friend Daniel McCoy came over from Australia and stayed for two months, the time went pretty fast but it was really cool. We have just been riding Motocross and trail riding out in the hills behind our house a whole heap. Also we have been swimming at the local pools and playing tennis and basketball and doing stuff that I would never really think to do at home in Australia. Since Anthony broke his leg at Road Atlanta and Aaron is still recovering from the Daytona crash, a lot of people have been asking how it feels to be the only Gobert left....It's weird, last year I was the only one of us not in the AMA, now that I'm finally here, the boys got injured. So it looks like I will be flying the flag at a few of the races by myself for now, so I better run up near the front a bit more I think...I will be trying my hardest, that's for sure! My Mum will be here for Pikes Peak and Road America so that will be good and then Aaron will be back over here early next month so things will be starting to return to normal pretty soon. I'll catch up with everybody after Road America... |
