Australian Road Racing Championships - Round 4 - Ducati Dealer Team Report

Round four of the highly competitive Australian Supersport Championship was held at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway on Sunday August 27, with the racing in both 9-lap races as fierce as it has been all season.

The Ducati Dealer Team's Steve Martin finished the round with a fourth and sixth place finish after the two close races. Yamaha rider Robbie Baird won both races ahead of teammate Kevin Curtain and in the process moved to the lead in the championship points table overhauling Honda's Adam Fergusson.

Qualifying was close, with Baird, Curtain and Fergusson all under the existing Supersport lap record, with Baird setting the fastest time of 1-min 35.4593-seconds around the demanding 3.90km layout. Martin put his DDT Ducati 748R on the outside of the front row with a time of 1:36.3019.

Martin looked set to upset the pre-race favouries as he powered the Ducati to the lead from the start of race one. He led the field across the start / finish line for the opening four laps before Baird and Curtain made their move. With up to seven riders involved in the battle for the lead, Martin remained in contention throughout, making a bold move on Fergusson at turn two on the final lap to grab fourth place.

Martin found himself down the order as the field charged into turn one at the start of race two. From that point it was difficult to make forward progress but Martin worked his way back from eighth on lap one to cross the finish line in sixth position. Baird took the race win with a flag to flag victory ahead of Curtain, with Daniel Stauffer making it three Yamaha's on the podium.

"We came away from Eastern Creek with a fair result I feel," said Martin. "The riders who finished ahead of me have done a ton of testing here in the past couple of months, so I'm not that surprised at their pace. When we go to Phillip Island for the next round in two weeks time, I'm sure that things will be different. Having led the first four laps of race one was good, but from that point on it showed where we have to concentrate on more development with the bike. We made a couple of changes to the rear suspension for race two, but that did not work as well as I would have expected and in the end I wasn't able to do the lap times that I needed to do."

"This weekend gave us some positive indications as to the directions we have to take with our development," said team manager Shaun Sutcliffe. "At the last round at Willowbank we had a few problems, but we were able to get them sorted for this weekend and it showed with our lap times. The Eastern Creek layout doesn't entirely suit the Ducati, so we can only do the best we can on the day and that is what Steve did."

Round 5 of the Australian Supersport Championship will be held at Victoria's  Phillip Island circuit on September 9-10.
