ARRC Round 5 - Phillip Island - September 9th & 10th - Preview

The seven round Series will feature not only Australia's top national riders but the talented Anthony Gobert who has returned to Australia after his ride with the Bimota Team ceased when the team folded. Gobert will finish the season riding for Nick Meskos and the Advantage Honda Team aboard a Honda CBR929. Anthony joins younger brothers Alex and Aaron at the Phillip Island Round competing against 17 year old Alex who rides for the Mobil Honda Team aboard a 919 CBR Honda in the Superbike class. Aaron Gobert , riding a 250 Aprilia ,currently leads the 250 Production Championship after a successful last round taking pole position and both race wins.

Ansett Airfreight Suzuki rider Shawn Giles goes into this round with a comfortable lead in the Championship after having blitzed the field in previous rounds taking 8 wins from 8 starts plus 2 pole positions along the way. Currently placed 2nd in the championship is another teenager, Victorian Craig Coxhell. Riding Radar's Team Yamaha YZF-R1, Coxhell could only manage two 4th places last round at Eastern Creek due to an ankle injury. Team-mate Kevin Curtain (YZF-R1) was back in form and improving his championship standing going from 8th to 4th position on the points tally finishing 2nd in both races to Giles with Mobil Honda's Adam Fergusson taking both third places on the day.

With the Supersport Championship still up for grabs these riders are setting a blistering pace at all rounds with any of the top three riders still in with a title chance. Radar's Team Yamaha riders Robbie Baird and Kevin Curtain set the hot pace at Eastern Creek with hard charging Chad Turnbull (Kawasaki ZX6R) putting the pressure on in race 1followed by Ducati's Steve Martin, followed by Dan Stauffer with Mobil Honda's Adam Fergusson hot on their tails. Both Curtain and Baird broke the current lap record set by Andrew Pitt last year, with Kevin Curtain taking the lap record by the greatest margin.

Australian Championship events for not only the Superbikes and Supersports but also the 125 and 250 GP's, 250 Production, Sidecars and Harley Sportsters will feature on the day. Victorian Aaron Gobert leads the 250 Production Championship by a small margin of only 20 points from nearest rival Rodney Taplin. RS125 Honda rider Jay Taylor leads the 125GP Championship also by a slim margin of only 6 points from Joshua Brookes. 

In the 250GP class, Shaun Geronimi has a strong lead after dominating all rounds with 8 wins from 8 starts. 

In the Sidecar Championship Victorian team of Vince Messina and Allison Scoullar have narrowed the lead of Ray Spence and passenger Jon Winders. Spence and Winders took their 4th pole position for the season but suffered an engine failure on the last lap in race 1 at Eastern Creek handing the win over to Messina, from New Zealander's Buckley and Abrahams. In Race 2 they turned the table and took the win from Messina./ Scoullar from Buckley/Abrahams with West Australians Rob Hair and Chris Burrows pipping Spence for the days 2nd placing overall. 
Championship Points: Spencer/Winders 149, Messina/Scoullar 130, Cullan/Curran 92, Hair/Burrows 84. 

Wayne Clarke and John Allen continue to dominate the Harley-Davidson Sportsters Championship with Clarke taking line honours at the Eastern Creek round John Allen and Rob Hermans.
Championship Points: Clarke and Allen tied on 182, Hermans 111, A Fisher 89, J Greedy 72. 

An added feature of the weekends racing will be the return of the Superbike Legends of the 80's. Malcolm Campbell, Robbie Phillis, Andrew Johnson along with Roger Heyes, Graeme "Goose" Muir, Greg Johnson, Scott Stevens, Gordon Barrett, Shaun Gallagher, Glen Middlemiss, Barry Ditchburn and multiple sidecar champion Geoff Taylor will be on the track Sunday lunchtime for a ride down memory lane and be available to the public for autographs.

The weekend of September 8th - 9th and 10th will see Practice for all classes commences Friday from 9am, Qualifying on Saturday from 9am - 4.30pm with Sunday's entertainment getting underway at 9am for warm-ups with the first race starting at 10.45am.
