2000 Australian Road Racing Championships - Round 3 - Queensland Raceway

Queensland Raceway, just west of Ipswich, will play host to Round 3 of the Shell Advance Australian Superbike Championships on   the weekend of June 3 and 4th.

Ansett Airfreight Suzuki rider Shawn Giles looks set to continue his blitz in the Superbike class, having taken out 4 wins from 4 starts in the first two rounds of the Series.   Giles, riding the only FIM spec Superbike (but a ‘97 model) in a strong field of competitors, currently leads the Shell Advance Australian Superbike Championship on 101 points, 42 points clear of Radar’s Team Yamaha young gun, seventeen year old Craig Coxhell with 59 points, 10 points head of 3rd placed Paul Free, also riding for Team Ansett Airfreight Suzuki.

Mobil Honda’s Adam Fergusson had a disappointing round 2, after being the fastest qualifier at the opening round at Oran Park in both the Superbike and Supersport classes, things didn’t quite go his way at the Winton round with a fifth in race 1 after a near disaster with a back marker and race 2 saw an excursion through the mud infield.

Dual Australian Superbike Champion Marty Craggill returned to the Series at Winton aboard his brand new and unsorted Advantage Honda CBR900RR, taking two fourths on the day. Craggill is not to be under estimated, with his past experience and the bike hopefully sorted he will be a powerful contender.

Only 1 point separates the leaders in the Supersport class with Fergusson holding the slim lead from Ducati Dealer team’s Steve Martin. 1999 Supersport Champion Kevin Curtain second fastest after a tumble in qualifying battled for the lead with Fergusson and Martin taking first and second and Curtain third in race 1. Race two saw Fergusson take the win from Martin and Queenslander Chad Turnbull (Team Kawasaki ZX-6R) finishing third after a fall in race 1. Fergusson leads the Championship on 52pts, Martin 51, Curtain 41 and Jason Kain on 39pts.

Queenslander Ben Attard (Aprilia) has moved into second position on the points table for the 250cc Production Championship. Victorian Aaron Gobert, taking 3 wins from 4 starts so far leads the Championship on 69 pts, just 7 pts ahead of Attard from Danny Carter on 47 points, Rodney Taplin making up for his round 1 disqualification for machine ineligibility, taking a 2nd in race 1 and the win and lap record in race 2 sitting in 4th position on 46 pts.

Current 250GP Championship leader and defending Champion, Shaun Geronimi continues his winning performances by taking 4 wins from 4 starts in the opening two rounds, sitting on 102 pts.  Queenslander John Allen riding the AlumaLite Racing’s Honda RS250 grabbed pole position on the day just ahead of Geronimi. Allen finished 2nd in race 1, but had to pull out of race 2 with a blown clutch. Terry Carter (Yamaha) came in 2nd overall on the day with two strong performances.  Not content with just competing in one Championship class, Victorian Terry Carter (TZ Yamaha) also competes in the 125GP Championship. He continued with his good form and grabbed pole position on his RSHonda 125 at Winton to take home a second in race 1and the win in race 2 after a thrilling dual with a number of riders dicing for the front positions. Jay Taylor placed 2nd overall on the day with a win in race 1 and a 4th in race two. Taylor leads the Championship on 70 pts, Teniswood 68pts, Peter Galvin 67pts and Carter 55 pts.

Even though the sidecar competitors struggled to get grip on the track at Winton, Ray Spencer and Jon Winders continued in their winning form and took the overall round win after finishing behind Vince Messina and passenger Allison Scoullar who set a new lap record. Karen Gregory, one of only two females on the sidecar grid at Queensland took out the Best B grade performance at Winton with passenger Mick Moloney. Twelve sidecars have entered for the Queensland round including locals Stacey Sellar and Shane Waters who should have some home track advantage.

Harley fans can listen to the big bore bellow of the Harley 883 Sportsters as ex Production champ Wayne Clarke continues to defend his lead from last year’s winner, Queenslander John Allen and Victorian Rob Hermans. Clarke on 102 pts holds a 22 pt lead over Allen on 80 and Hermans on 61 pts. Well known Queensland road racer Peter Salmon will be pulling all stops out to prove he still has the will to win.

Practice commences on Friday at 9am, Saturday qualifying from 9am for all classes
