British Superbike Championship - Round 9 Preview - Cadwell

Team Kawasaki head to Cadwell Park and the ninth round of the British Superbike Championship confident they can turn in their best results of the season.

Steve Plater is fully fit for his return to the track he regards as home turf, while Marty Craggill is confident he will be sufficiently recovered from his Knockhill tumble to tackle the challenges of
Cadwell's uniquely undulating terrain.  "Coming from Lincolnshire I cut my racing teeth at Cadwell Park and I know the circuit better than any other in the series," said Plater, from Woodhall Spa.  "I always look forward to racing here and I have had some of the best results of my career - including my first ever race, which ended with a win - and last year's supersport race victory."

Double Australian Champion Craggill broke his collarbone and cracked two ribs in a practice crash at Knockhill but is confident he'll be back in action for the Bank Holiday Monday race.  "With those injuries all you can do is take it easy and that's a difficult thing for a racer," said Marty. "Although I am confident I'll be OK I can't be 100 per cent certain until I actually get on the bike for unofficial practice on Saturday."

"The important thing for Marty is to make sure he is fully recovered," says Simon Buckmaster, manager of the TOTAL backed team. "As far as Steve is concerned, he is capable of scoring strongly at Cadwell and I have high hopes he can produce our best result of the year to date."

GSE Racing arrives at Cadwell Park this Bank Holiday weekend with INS Ducati riders Neil Hodgson and Niall Mackenzie determined to strengthen their positions in the championship points table. Current series leader Neil Hodgson has stood on the British Championship podium thirteen times from just 16 races so far this year - including four race wins. The 26-year-old Burnley rider is determined to continue the outstanding form shown so far into the remaining eight rounds, to hopefully capture the British Superbike Championship he so desires:

"I'm really looking forward to coming back to Cadwell Park," said Hodgson. "It's one of those great tracks that you don't need a lot of testing to be able to set the bike up and do well. I had one of the first wins of my career there on a 125 and finished second last year - even after going on the grass - and would have finished higher than fifth in the second race if it hadn't have been stopped after only 12 laps. The only part of the track I didn't like was Barn Corner, but now that's been reconfigured, so that should improve things even further. In fact, I can't wait to get out on the circuit and race the INS Ducati!"

Demon Vimto Honda Supremo Paul Bird has called on his restructured team to come up with a victory as the British Championship heads into round nine at Cadwell Park over the Bank Holiday weekend.  "I've forgotten what it feels like to win a race!" says Bird. "But I've got a good feeling about Cadwell so I'm hoping we can put that right this weekend. I've got a good feeling we will!"

And whilst it will be asking a lot of American Tom Kipp to feature prominently in the Superbike races aboard the kitted VTRSP1, it is certainly within the realms of possibility that 250cc new boy Roland Sands and 125cc rookie Stuart Easton could end up on the top step of the rostrum.

Four times AMA champion Kipp, still deputising for the injured James Toseland, flies back into the UK today after spending a week on business back home in Chardon, Ohio and will be looking to gain on his experiences at Knockhill two weeks ago where he scored a best result of eighth.   "I knew this series was tough before I came and so it proved to be at Knockhill. But we tested the bike before I went home and we're confident we can improve at Cadwell" said the 31 year old reigning 750cc Supersport Champion.

Fellow American Sands scored a magnificent third place on his debut aboard the ex-John McGuinness TSR Honda in tricky conditions last time out but the 24 year old Californian is confident he can win before the end of the season, despite his lack of track knowledge.  "I've never seen Cadwell, not even on TV, so I don't know what to expect. The bike was working good at Knockhill and we had a test at Mallory which went really well so I guess there's no reason why we can't climb the steps again" said the 1998 AMA 250cc champion.

17 year old Scot Stuart Easton will be hoping that his run of bad luck will come to an end at Cadwell after the disappointment of just missing out on the rostrum in a number of races this season. Despite this the young Hawick rider lies fifth in the series standings.  "I can't believe my luck because nearly everytime I'm in with a shout at the front, someone crashes into me or I make a tiny mistake. I'm desperate to win a race or at least get on the rostrum" said Easton who also tested the spare 250cc machine recently with a view to an outing towards the end of the year.

James Toseland continues to make good progress as he recovers from the broken femur he suffered whilst testing at Cadwell last month. The 19-year-old Sheffield ace has started light training on his injured leg and plans to be back on a bike before the year-end.  "I'm doing plenty of physiotherapy and training as much as I can at the moment. There have been no complications so I am seeing the surgeon who fixed my broken ankles in two weeks whereby we'll set a date to have the metalwork removed. Then it's a case of seeing how things go but all being well, I'm hoping to be able to test again sometime in October. I really want to get out there again but there's no use in rushing things. I'll be back when I'm ready and not before" said James.

Aussies are currently 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th in British SuperSport.  3rd and 4th in British SuperStock.  Chris Vermeulen will have to be careful that he does not injure himself this weekend and mess up his entry onto the World SuperSport stage.
