British SuperSport 2000 - Silverstone

Kirk McCarthy won today’s sixth round British Supersport championship at Silverstone, taking victory from former team-mate, Jim Moodie, by half a second after 20 laps of the 2.25-mile Northamptonshire circuit. GlenRichards on another Honda CBR600 was third.

McCarthy passed Moodie at Becketts corner with two laps to go after battling with the Scot throughout the 20-lap race. His new team-mate, John McGuinness, finished in seventh place, direct from victory in the British 250 championship race.

McCarthy missed the chequered flag at the end of the race and completed another fast lap before he realised that he had won, reducing Moodie’s series lead to three points.

"It was really hard work," said the 30-year-old Australian, "and I just had no idea where I was. I saw the board saying one more lap and just went really hard, but I missed the finish line and the flag. I thought I had to do another hard lap but none of the marshals signalled anything."

McGuinness, who missed last weekend’s British Supersport race because of an injured hand, was delighted with his first outing on the Dunlop-shod Castrol Honda. "I couldn’t believe how aggressive the start was," he said. "It really fried my brain!"

The 26-year-old from Morcambe continued: "I was really tired after winning the 250 race and by the time I’d settled into the race, Kirk and the others had gone. I know what to expect now but overall I’m delighted."
