McCARTHY GOES FOR LEAD AT OULTON

Castrol Honda rider, Kirk McCarthy, heads to Oulton Park in Cheshire this weekend aiming to take the lead in this year’s British Supersport championship.

McCarthy will be seeking his fourth win of the 2000 campaign following victoriess at Brands Hatch, Thruxton, and the last round at Silverstone on July 2. The Australian’s former team-mate, Jim Moodie, currently holds a slender three-point advantage over McCarthy in the title stakes.

"The bike’s running really well now," said McCarthy, 30, "and I’ll be hoping for an improvement on my fourth place at Oulton in May. At least I know the place a little better now rather than learning my way round as I was last time."

McCarthy’s new Castrol Honda partner, John McGuinness, will be on only his second outing on the Honda CBR600, having missed the fifth round Snetterton race through injury. He is expecting an improvement on his seventh placed finish at Silverstone.

"I’m still learning to ride the bike," said the 26-year-old from Morcambe, "but I’d just finished the 250 race at Silverstone so I was pretty tired. I’ll be fresher at Oulton because the 250 race is an hour after the Supersport so I’m looking forward to the weekend."

Practice for round seven of the series gets underway at Oulton Park this afternoon. On Saturday, two 30-minute qualifying sessions will determine the grid for Sunday’s race.
