Brogan to replace McGuinness

Steve Brogan has been named as replacement rider for the injured John McGuinness in the Castrol Honda British Supersport team.

The 19-year-old Liverpudlian has been drafted into the team while McGuinness recovers from the fractured hip joint he sustained in a 250cc qualifying crash at Oulton Park on 15 July. McGuinness is expected to see a specialist at Lancaster hospital this afternoon for the latest prognosis on his injury.

Brogan has been riding a PR Tyres-backed Honda CBR600 in the British Supersport series this year with a best result of seventh at Snetterton’s fifth round last month. He will continue to ride the team’s Honda CBR900RR FireBlade in the British Superstock championship in which he currently lies in fifth place.

Brogan tested the Castrol Honda CBR600 at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire yesterday afternoon and was delighted with his first outing on the Dunlop-shod machine.

"I spent some time getting used to the Dunlop tyres, which allow the bike to turn much quicker than I’m used to," said the teenager who will turn 20 on August 5. "I hardly had to change any of John’s settings so I was able to concentrate on riding the bike which was every bit as good as I expected it to be."

Brogan tested the machine alongside his new Castrol Honda team-mate, Kirk McCarthy, who spent the Cadwell Park session trying out new parts on his own CBR600. The pair will test again at Knockhill on August 9, prior to the eighth round British Supersport encounter there on August 13.
