Festival of Speed - Olivers Mount, Scarborough - April 2000
| Demon Vimto Honda rider JOHN McGUINNESS was
in a class of his own when he swept to three unchallenged victories last weekend at the
tight and twisty closed public circuit at Olivers Mount, Scarborough. In doing so, the 26 year old Morecambe rider lifted the prestigious Ken Redfern Trophy to add to his impressive list of titles that he won at the Yorkshire seaside track last year which now means in the last twelve months, he has won every single solo trophy there. Aboard the potent 500cc Grand Prix Honda, McGuinness won the first race by an amazing thirty seconds before easing to victory in legs two and three by a mere ten seconds from the Yamaha R7 of former Champion Dean Ashton with Welshman Jason Griffiths claiming third overall. "It's great to ride the 500 because I don't get much chance so when I do, I try to make the most of it," said the reigning 250cc British Champion. "I like coming to Scarborough and because I had such a good lead, I thought I'd pull a few wheelies for the fans. I really eased up in the later stages because there was no point it risking anything. I'll maybe go for the outright lap record when I come back in September!" quipped McGuinness. McGuinness headed straight off from Scarborough to catch an overnight ferry to Northern Ireland where he will contest this week's International North West 200 aboard the Honda VTR SP1 Superbike as well as going for his inaugural 250 win on the Portrush triangle. Joining McGuinness in the Demon Vimto team for the North West and the forthcoming TT will be Irish legend Joey Dunlop who took a fine second place in Saturday's Cookstown 100 race aboard the same bike he will be racing over this next month on the roads.
"No Thanks! Those sorts of places are too scary for me; I don't mind admitting that! I enjoyed having a wobble round at Scarborough but I'll leave the racing to the likes of John. I think he's got a screw loose!" said James. |
