A mixed bag at Oulton Park for Chris Vermeulen
| After a stunning debut at the European
Superstock Championships expectations of a repeat performance were high. But motorcycle
racing is a fickle business and lady luck was not on hand last weekend so a fine 3rd and a
crash were the end result. Qualifying for the 600 Supersport race was spent experimenting with suspension settings, Chris has not been satisfied with the suspension of either bike right from race one. But with some help and some inside information the bike was suddenly handling to his liking. "We're 11th on the grid for the 600 Supersport race". Said Chris. "It doesn't sound too good but I'm now really happy with the way the bike steers". "I was on a really hot lap when the red flag come out, stopping the session early, I'm sure it would have put us on the front row". "I think we're in good shape". Starting from the middle of the third row Chris got a great start and forced his way into 5th place by the end of lap 1. However turn 2 lap 2 it all turned pear shape, Ducati rider Scott Smart crashed right in front of Chris and with no place to go it was all over early, crashing out of the race. "Scott crashed right in front of me, I hit him and his bike but still thought I might save it until I hit a hay bale and it just dragged me off the bike". Said Chris. "I'm disappointed but that's racing I really thought we could win that one". The Superstock class is a cracker, big bore sports bikes with minimal modifications allowed makes for great racing. Qualifying began and ended with Chris on pole once again. "Its great to be on pole and the race will be a good one, Steve Platter on the Kawasaki will be the joker in the pack". "We're still down on straight line speed but faster through the turns". Said Chris. And what a race it was, probably the best Superstock race to date, five bikes, two Yamaha's, two Honda's and one Kawasaki nose to tail for three Quarters of the race, swapping places and paint at every corner. As the race came to its climax, Dave Jeffries (Yamaha R1), Steve Plater (Kawasaki ZX9-R) and Chris had made a small break from the other two only to have a back marker decide the outcome. "We came up behind a slower rider to lap him". Said Chris. "Dave went one way, I went the other, the backmarker must have thought he was surrounded and moved over on me, I had to roll off so as not to drill him and that was all it took for both Dave and Steve to beat me to the line." "Last lap and last throw of the dice". Said Chris. Chris will now return home for a well deserved break and his 18th birthday. He currently lies 3rd in the Superstock Championship, and 4th in the Supersport class and will no doubt improve on that when he returns to battle on the 25th of June at Snetterton.
