Grand Prix 2000 - Round 11
- Brno - 125 Race
August 20, 2000 - 19 laps
| Ui got the best jump from
the green light with Locatelli and Alzamora right behind him with the whole field making
it through the 1st turn okay for a change. Locatelli took the lead halfway around the 1st lap. Alzamora put a really aggressive move on Ui for 2nd place early in lap 2. Lap 4 - Locatelli with a 1 second lead over Ui, Alzamora & Cecchinello. Both Azuma and Scalvini had bike problems and pulled into the pits. De Angelis & De Puniet both crashed out earlier in the race. Lap 6 - Locatelli's 1 second lead over Ui was still in place but Ui was working hard to try and close the gap. Nieto Jr. hit the deck and looked to have hurt his hand. Ui set the fastest lap to close right up onto the tail of Locatelli on lap 7. Lap 8 saw Ui hit the lead briefly before Locatelli once again hit the front but shortly afterwards Ui took the lead again with 11 laps to go. Locatelli in the lead again on lap 9 and continuing his battle with Ui. Alzamora & Cecchinello were having their own battle for 3rd place only a couple of bike lengths behind the leaders. 1.2 seconds cover the leading quartet who had closed up slightly by the start of lap 11. Locatelli upped the pace on lap 12 to stretch his lead out to over a second but on lap 13 Ui and Alzamora started catching him again! 4 laps to go and Locatelli had responded to the Ui & Alzamora challenge by extending his lead back out to over a second. Cecchinello had lost touch with the leading trio and was now over 6 seconds behind in 4th. A huge battled for 6th place was underway with 5 riders entering corners side-by-side. Alzamora under Ui for 2nd with 3 laps to run but Ui took that 2nd position back with 2 laps to go but Locatelli has the win wrapped up with a 2 second lead. Last lap - backmarkers are coming thick & fast now and may allow Ui to hold out Alzamora as these 125 machines do not have the power to make up for any little slow-ups from the backmarkers. |
