Grand Prix 2000 - Round 12 - Estoril

Ui gets the jump from pole position at a sunny Estoril circuit. Poggiali 2nd followed by Vincent and Alzamora.

Locatelli was fastest on the 2nd lap around but is back in 10th.

Alzamora picked up the pace to close right up on Ui and the 17-year-old Poggiali by lap 5. Locatelli up in to 6th.

Locatelli up in to 4th by lap 6 after starting from the 4th row of the grid. Locatelli set the fastest lap again on the 7th lap and is now only 5 seconds behind the leading trio of Ui, Poggiali and Alzamora.

Alzamora under Poggiali on lap 8 for second. Ueda in the dirt after struggling back in 8th.

Ui down! Ui lost the front on lap 8 which leaves Poggiaili to fly the Derbi flag but he has to get back in front of Alzamora in order to take the win. Locatelli in 3rd.

Poggiali's Derbi looks to have the upper hand in power out of the corners but Alzamora's Honda looks to maybe have an ever so slight top speed advantage at the end of the straight. If it comes down to a run to the flag Poggiali's Derbi may have the advantage as the start/finish line is in the first half of the main straight.

The battle continued up until lap 18 when Poggiali's Derbi gave up the ghost. What an absolute blow to the young teenager. After battling hard and it must be said sensibly he is robbed of his chance for a win by a machine failure. I am sure tears will flow in the close knit Derbi pit.

6 laps to run and Alzamora has this in he bag if he keeps it together. Locatelli is 3 seconds back and it will take a miracle for him to be able to catch Alzamora.

Azuma crashed out on the last lap while Alzamora cruises to victory from Locatelli.
