400cc  TT  RACE   WINNER  EXCLUDED

Monday's 400cc Isle of Man TT winner Geoff McMullan has been excluded after it was discovered his Yamaha engine was oversize.

TT officials measured the engine and reported its displacement as 599.06cc. McMullan was excluded, fined £500 and excluded from the remaining races at the 2000 TT.

Ulsterman McMullan's exclusion hands the race win to New Zealander Brett Richmond who finished Monday's three-lap race 16 seconds behind McMullan.

"It's great news," said 29-year-old Richmond. "Not the ideal way to win a TT but I'll take it. I had a good feeling I could be in the top three after practice and once the race was under way I was confident I could win."

Richmond, a parts manager for a London courier company, added: "I messed up the pit stop in the race and got a five-second penalty for over-shooting the stop box, so I knew my chances had gone. But it's time to go out and celebrate now."

"I'm pleased to get the win for New Zealand and for Honda," concluded Richmond who comes from Te Awamutu near Hamilton.
