JEFFERIES TOPS TT LEADERBOARD - Friday June 2nd

David Jefferies will start tomorrow’s TT Formula 1 race as favourite after topping the leaderboard in this week’s rain affected practice sessions on the Isle of Man. The Yorkshire rider lapped the 37.73-mile Mountain course in 18minutes 11.6 seconds at 124.43mph - close to lap record pace - on Monday evening.

Second fastest was Jason Griffiths with Jim Moodie, the current outright lap record holder, third quickest on his Honda Britain CBR929RR FireBlade. Joey Dunlop, 23 times a TT winner, holds fifth place on the factory engined Honda VTR SP1.

Dunlop commented: "I’m riding so many bikes here that I don’t worry too much about practice. We’ve had some problems this week but the VTR was pretty good by Wednesday. I’m confident I can go quicker in the race though and that’s what counts."

Jason Griffiths heads the Lightweight 250 leaderboard with a 117.90 mph lap on Monday, closely followed by Honda mounted Ian Lougher and last year’s winner John McGuinness. New Zealander, Brett Richmond, riding a Honda CBR400RR, leads the Lightweight 400 riders.

In the Junior 600 class, Ulsterman Adrian Archibald was fastest with a lap of 18m46.8s (120.54mph) on his Dowd Honda CBR600 – almost six seconds faster than Ian Simpson’s two-year-old record. Archibald is closely followed by David Jefferies, with Moodie and Dunlop, both on Honda machines, third and fourth fastest respectively.

Archibald, on a Honda CBR900RR FireBlade, was the second fastest rider in the Production class behind David Jefferies, with Shaun Harris third and local rider Richard Quayle in fourth on another FireBlade.

Joey Dunlop’s brother, Robert, was the fastest Ultra-Lightweight 125 rider, followed by Darren Lindsay and Gary Dynes with Joey himself fifth quickest. In the Formula 2 Sidecar category, last year’s ‘B’ race winners, Rob Fisher and Rick Long, were the fastest pairing with a lap of 109.70mph lap last Monday.

This year’s Isle of Man TT races are scheduled to get underway with the six-lap TT Formula 1 race at 2.00pm tomorrow (Saturday), followed by the Sidecar Race ‘B’ at 5.00pm.
