World SuperSport 2000 - Round 10 - Oschersleben (Germany) - SuperSport

Privateer Honda rider Karl Muggeridge sits on pole for this 10th and penultimate round of the World SuperSport Championship.   The Australian has signed up with the Corona Suzuki squad for 2001 and they must be rubbing their hands together with the thought of getting Karl on their new, heavily improved and fuel-injected GSX-R 600 for next year.

Muggas bogged down off the line and Chambon led them into turn one.  A huge pile-up in the middle of turn 1 resulted in around half a dozen bikes ending up in the dirt including those belonging to MacPherson & Vermeulen.  Some of the riders are very hurt with at least one being strapped into a stretcher.

Surprisingly no yellow flag and Chambon maintains the lead into lap 2.  Pitt up into 5th, Muggeridge 6th.  Not for long though as Muggas took that 5th position right back.

Chambon, Bontempi, Foret, Kellner, Muggeridge, Pitt, is the race order on lap 3.  Pitt down with championship leader Casoli and out of the race.

Muggeridge up into 4th and Kellner has taken the lead from Chambon.  Only 1 second covers the top 5 but Kellner looks to maybe have the speed to stretch out a bit of a lead.  Whitham has made an awesome charge from 19th on the grid to be up into 8th.

Teuchert under Muggeridge with 20 laps to go.   Whitham now up into 7th and right on the tail of the leading pack.  Teuchert into 3rd.  Riba is starting to challenge Muggeridge for 5th with 19 laps to run.   But Muggeridge puts an unbelievable move on Foret to take 4th position.  Is this a sign of things to come!

Teuchert through on Chambon for 2nd.  Yamaha, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Honda.

Riba is down, maybe taken out from behind by Whitham.

Halfway through the race now and the Yamaha duo of Kellner and Teuchert remain out in front with Chambon a few bike lengths behind and Muggeridge around 2 seconds behind in 4th and definitely slowing a little.

Chambon is not letting the Yamaha men get away and is trying to slide it under Teuchert at every opportunity.  The Frenchman is determined to leave here with a good result it seems.

Muggeridge is being hounded by Foret now.  His Pirellis may be shot as the other Pirelli runners also seem to have slowed markedly.

Foret through on Muggas for 4th with 12 laps to go.

Muggeridge back past Foret for 4th with 21 of the 28 laps down but is way behind the leading trio of Kellner, Teuchert and Chambon.

Xaus is closing on Muggeridge and Foret, the Ducati rider has 4 laps to close the gap which is now down to 2.5 seconds.

Final lap and the leaders remain as Kellner, Teuchert, & Chambon a second behind the two Yamaha men.  Teuchert through on his team-mate for the lead but no, they have taken each other out 2 corners before the finish.   Their chance to get away from Casoli in the championship has been finished by the two Germans taking each other out.  Chambon looked behind him after seeing the two Yamaha men go down and responded by doing the mother of all wheelies down the main straight in his usual outrageous style along with his manic rolling burnouts where he flicks the bike from side-to-side.  Can't wait to see him do it on the new GSX-R 750 in SuperBike next year.  Bring it on........

The demise of the three top guys in the championship at this race has seen the reigning SuperSport world champion, Stephane Chambon shoot from 4th to 1st in the championship standings with only 1 round to go.  He will only need to finish in the top 4 to lift the title!
