World SuperBike 2000 - Round 8 - Valencia - Race 1
| Corser got a great start and Robert Ulm
ended up on his bum before the 1st corner, Bostrom in the lead for the 1st of these 23
laps. Ulm is hurt and is being helped off the track, he hit Bayliss while going down
but Troy looks to have recovered okay. Corser hits the front and leads them across the line to commence lap 2 followed by Bostrom, Haga, Chili, Fujiwara, Bayliss, Edwards, Slight. Corser is opening up a little bit of a gap over Bostrom who is being challenged by Haga then a further second behind is Chili, Fujiwara, Bayliss, Edwards, Slight. Bayliss is being challenged by Edwards & Slight and will have to find a way past Fujiwara if he is to hold off these Honda men. Fujiwara through on Chili, Bayliss follows him through. The heavily injured Chili is now being hassled by the Honda men. Corser, Bostrom & Haga are the leading trio. Chili's Suzuki goes bang and he has to pull off the circuit and park it up. Bayliss does not look to have a lot of confidence in the front end of his Ducati at this early stage of the race and Fujiwara has been able to open up some ground on him. Corser, Bostrom, Haga, Fujiwara, Bayliss, Edwards, Slight. Goddard 11th. Corser looks great but he is not really getting away from Bostrom and Haga. Fujiwara is a couple of seconds behind the leading trio with Bayliss a few bike lengths further back. Bostrom looks to actually be making a little ground on Corser! Slight is in front of Edwards for 6th. Lap 7 - Corser, Bostrom, Haga, Bayliss, Slight, Edwards. Edwards back through on Slight, the two Honda riders are right with each other again here at Valencia, lets hope they do not trip each other up like last week. Borja runs off the track. Bostrom is right on Corser's tail with Haga further second behind. Then there is a 5 second gap back to Bayliss with 15 laps to run. Corser has upped his pace slightly in response to Bostrom's challenge and has gained a few bike lengths on the American. The leading duo have left Haga behind them now and it looks as though the battle for the win will be between Corser and Bostrom. Edwards through on Fujiwara for 5th and Slight will also be through shortly, yep there it is Slight through too. The Honda men are only a couple of bike lengths behind the 4th placed Bayliss and may have the pace to catch the Australian. Goddard 10th, Yanagawa 12th. Corser and Bostrom now have 3 seconds on Haga who in turn has around 6 seconds on Bayliss who is being closely pursued by both the Castrol Honda riders. Corser up on the ripple strip then as he is being pressured by the young American but Troy still has a few bike lengths on the NCR Ducati man. Bostrom's bike is really moving around on the front end as he wrings every last bit of speed out of it. 10 laps to go - Corser, Bostrom (+1.3 secs), Haga (+3 secs), Bayliss (+ 9 secs), Slight, Edwards. Corser is taking time out of Bostrom hand over fist now, a full second on that lap. Unless anything weird happens this will be a Corser, Bostrom, Haga podium. With Bayliss, Edwards and Slight fighting it out for the 4th position right to race end. The battle for 4th is happening 12 seconds behind race leader Corser, Bayliss now has around a second on Edwards & Slight. Goddard through on Antonello for 9th. Aoki is in 8th and is closing on Fujiwara & the Castrol Honda riders, Goddard also looks to be making ground on them. Bayliss runs a little wide and does a little dirt tracking but gets back on track okay without losing too much time. Aoki through on Fujiwara for 7th. Corser now has over 3 seconds on Bostrom now and is doing a repeat performance of last weekend. Goddard is definitely making ground on Fujiwara and may well have him before the end of the race in 5 laps time. Aoki through on Slight and now starting to challenge Edwards who looks as though he may be struggling with a little rear end grip, Aoki through and he still has enough laps to close down on Bayliss who is around 2 seconds ahead of him. Corser now has a 6 second lead over Bostrom with 4 laps to run, Troy looks as though he has that Aprilia really working well. Aoki in the dirt after his huge charge through the field. A bit of a shame really as he was not looking untidy at all when putting those passing manoeuvres on the Honda men. These positions look pretty settled with 2 laps to go - Corser, Bostrom Haga, Bayliss, while the two Castrol Honda riders fight between themselves for 5th. Final lap and Corser now has 8 seconds on Bostrom who in turn has around 6 seconds on Haga. Bayliss has enough room to hold on to his 4th place but it is yet to be seen whether Slight or Edwards will take 5th. Corser comes across the line with his fist in the air, Bostrom, Haga, Edwards who had to hold out Goddard rather than Slight who must have had a moment on the final lap. The championship has closed further now and Bayliss holds 117 points down in 6th but has only competed in less than half of this seasons races! On his performances so far if he started the season in WSB he would be the championship leader. Edwards was not happy with his set-up - "The rear of the machine was really bouncing about and juddering. I thought it may have been a problem with the tyre but we checked that out and everything was OK. We'll make some changes to the rear suspension for the second race and try and cure the problem - I'm sure it can't be that bad again. I didn't make the best of starts in that first race so I need to brush up on that for race two." |
