Race 1 Shawn Giles got the holeshot with Coxhell close behind. But Curtain quickly marched his way to the front to take the lead on lap two. Lap three saw 'Krusty' Fergusson take Coxhell for third and on the next lap 'Krusty' also got Giles. Shannon Johnson moved up into fifth. By lap five Curtain had pulled 50 metres on Fergusson who in turn had 50 metres on Giles. 'Krusty' closed the gap to Curtain right down over the following few laps. Charlton took fifth from Johnson and Maxwell also decided to join this battle. Krusty hit the ripple strip on the main straight which knocked his feet off the pegs, somehow the Mobil Honda rider held it together and got straight back on the case. Local champion Scott Tulk then crashed out at turn one. Charlton closed in on Coxhell. Maxwell passed Johnson but the Fireworks King Honda rider was having none of that and came straight back at him under brakes into Novus. Curtain stretched his lead over Fergusson out to around 50 metres again in the closing laps. Shannon Johnson started to slow with bike problems. Lap 12 saw the leaders start to encounter lapped traffic. Curtain took the win with Fergusson around 50 metres behind and cursing a backmarker who he obviously blamed for slowing him on that last lap. Shawn Giles was six seconds down on Curtain as he crossed the line to take third, team-mate Scott Charlton right behind him.

Race 2 Giles forced his way through to the front in turn one. As they started lap two it was Giles, Curtain and a charging Coxhell leading the way from Fergusson and Johnson. The next time around Fergusson pushed Coxhell back to fourth and started closing on the leaders. Curtain powered past Giles as they crossed the start/finish line to commence lap three. Fergusson braked extremely late into Novus corner in an effort to get past Giles but the gap was too big. It looked as though Krusty had the speed to get the Suzuki before the race was done though, and probably sooner rather than later. Lap six and Krusty was still trying everything to get past Giles but couldn't quite manage to do it. The leading trio were covered by less than a second with Coxhell in fourth and being chased by Johnson. Fergusson finally managed to get under Giles into Novus and set out after Curtain with six laps to go. Johnson was now being caught by Charlton. Coxhell took Giles on lap 11 but Giles was somewhat content to let him through as he was fighting for the championship and was not eager to risk a good points finish. Lapped traffic started to pose a few problems and Fergusson was only a few tenths down on Curtain and on a mission to steal the win. The Victorian couldn't quite manage it however which meant Curtain completed the clean sweep. Shawn Giles' third place gave him an unassailable lead in the championship and thus was crowned champion 'elect' at Wanneroo with a round still remaining in the championship. |
