Canadian SuperBike Championship - Round 1- Calgary

Parts Canada Superbike Race #1 Calgary, Race Report.

Jordan Szoke has set the pole with new outright lap record on the Honda RC 51. 2nd on the Grid is Kawasaki of Michael Taylor on his ZX900R based superbike. 3rd is Honda Canadas Steve Crevier also on the RC 51. Finishing out the front row is Canadian Superbike Champion Francis Martin on his ZX7RR. Starting from row 2 are Linnley Clark on his 750cc GSXR Suzuki Superbike followed by Yamaha Canada R1 Mounted Frank Trombino and Benoit Pilon.

The flag drops and Taylor takes the lead on his ZX9R Kawasaki. Clark and his Suzuki pull up on the outside of Turn #1. #1 Francis Martin goes underneath and follows Taylor, Its Taylor, Martin, Clark, and Trombino, as history repeats itself and Kawasaki takes the lead. Lap #2 and Taylors bike can be seen visibly smoking out the exhaust. Taylor down the front 1 mile long straight on his 900 with Francis Martin and his 7X7RR Superbike in tow. There isn't much between these two but Taylor begins to
stretch a couple lengths. Martin on the brakes closes the distance and Clark is holding off Trombino, into Turn #1 Crevier blasts by Trombino, Pilon on the R1 is in 6th, Szoke the pole setter is in 7th and once again off to one of his typical slow starts. Taylor is just rocketing through the course and it looks like a Kawasaki parade once again. Taylor Martin Clark Crevier Trombino Pilon and now Szoke is charging, Szoke is past Pilon and now Trobino and appears to be booking. The R1s are not moving forward. Clark again is spinning it up, and Crevier takes advantage, and moves into 3rd. Kawasaki running 1&2 Honda in 3rd Suzuki in 4th, Szoke moves Past Clark, its now Kawasaki 1&2 with Hondas of Crevier and Szoke running 3rd and 4th, Clark is in 5th and being under the attack of Trombino and the R1. Csaba Werner on the ex Szoke CBR 900 crashes out of 7th. Yellow flag, bike looks in bad shape.

Szoke through the esses and PASSES teammate Crevier, now its Taylor Martin Szoke Crevier and Clark. Clark is losing touch and Trombino passes. Szoke down the front straight has closed up with Martin on the kawasaki, Crevier is right on Szokes ass, Szoke can't pass into turn #1 he's hot, pulls it in and maintains 3rd. Francis Martin is excellent on the brakes and shows his mettle closing on Taylor and holding of the Deep Braking Szoke.

Szoke up the outside of two, now the inside of 3 and startles Francis Martin, the #1 holder appears in trouble as Crevier follows underneath with Szoke, Taylor looks back before the Bustop and sees Szoke not Martin, Taylor exits the chicane full power front wheel lofted, Szoke is closing into the carousel on Taylor and pulling Crevier with him. Martin has recovered but now lost 10 lengths on the lead trio. Four Canadian Superbike champions and 8 Titles between them occuppy the top four positions. (Crevier 4, Taylor 2, Szoke 1 and Martin 1)

Clark and Trombino are 8 lengths back of Martin and engaged in their own battle.

Lap 8 and Taylor is still holding off both Szoke and Crevier along the mile long front straight. Crevier pulls up along side Szoke and is ready for the pass, he checks up, Jordan still on the brakes, STILL ON THE BRAKES SZOKE OUTBRAKES CREVIER AND THEN PASSESS TAYLOR STILL ON THE BRAKES HEADING INTO TURN #1.

UNBELIEVABLE, Szoke goes from 3rd to 1st as Crevier goes from 3rd to 2nd back to 3rd and Taylor finally is relagated to 2nd for the 1st time in the race. Szoke leaves turn one loosing no time, and continues his torrid pace, and shows no signs of defensive ride. He's lost nothing scrubbing off speed and Taylor is running wide into 2 and now 3, yet Crevier can't get by. Taylors bike is all over the track trying to get back near Szoke. He's lofting the wheel and missing the apexes. Through the Esses now to the Bus stop and Crevier still can't get past. Crevier jams it through , no, can't get through the Carousel and they head to the front straight. Taylor unable to gain
enough ground on Szoke and Creviers RC 51 is in the draft and right there with Taylor. Turn #1 and Szoke pulls more, Taylor runs wide again, and again through #3, and Crevier forces through, Crevier is after Szoke, and he's about 1 second back. Clark and Trombino are swapping back and forth and now Clark is showing the youngster a lesson in smooth riding as the erratic Trombino is losing ground to the unretired veteran.  American Larry Denning on his 4&6 R1 Yamaha is struggling to hold onto
10th vs a strong charge from Honda CBR 929 mounted local Clint McBain.  2 laps to go and Szoke is in traffic, Crevier is closing hard and fast and looks much smoother than Szoke, Szoke looks back sees Crevier and wicks it up past an R1 Mounted Backmarker, Szokes Bike Steps out sideways, and he is still on the gas, he can't put a wheel wrong, Crevier is getting through the traffic cleanly, Taylor has fallen back.
Szoke, Crevier, Taylor, Trombino, Clark Continue to battle, Szoke is getting his elbow close to the curbing, Crevier is definitely mounting a Charge toward his teammate, Szoke looks back again, and sees Crevier just before entering the bus stop.

Last Lap, Szoke has control down the front straight, and Creviers Bike definitely has something extra, Crevier just set the fastest lap of the race and both riders are under the record and qualifying times, Creviers bike has some legs going down the front straight, he's closing up again with Jordan, Jordan again a demon on the brakes, is pushing the front end into turn #1 like I have never seen done before, Crevier backs out a 2nd time, Jordans got his head down, the throttle is twisted, Crevier is definitely in control, and still chipping away at Szoke, Taylor now way off the leaders pace as its Honda 1 and 2, Through the ESSES and SZOKE JUST DESTROYS Crevier, he just appears to be reacting and nothing else, into the bus stop Crevier now to far back to make his move, into the Carousel and Crevier Closes up dramatically, into the last turn and Szoke holds the lead heading onto the Front Straight, up the chute to
the Checkered and its SZOKE CREVIER TAYLOR MARTIN CLARK TROMBINO The Green Machine has been humbled by the new HONDA WRECKING CREWS!

Quotes

Taylor: (3rd Place) "Well, I didn't get out in qualifying with either of the Hondas and they have some excellent speed. I know my ZX9R is plenty fast, so I was surprised. The Bike worked well and the brakes and throttle were fine, the tires peeled off and its a chassis set up problem, I was missing my apexes and it was difficult getting the bike through the mid corner sections. Well have that corrected for the 2nd race."

Crevier: "These races are too short, I am just getting going and its over. I set the fastest lap, but that's nothing here. They should combine the races into one long race, that's what I am conditioned to do. Jordan got under me early and I was stuck behind Taylor for a lap to long and Jordan didn't make a mistake on the last lap. There wasn't much I could do but be there and press him hard."

Szoke: "Yeah, like Steve said, the RC 51 is slow off the line, tall 1st gear, but I knew I could go fast and once I took the lead, I was ready to go faster if I needed to. I know the races are a little short for Steve, but I am certain if he had caught up to me I would have showed him I had a little more in reserve yet."

Notes - Honda's Campaign to derail the Green Machine and Prevent a possible 10
Superbike Championship appears to be working. Szoke ends Creviers consecutive winning streak and adds his own 6th Career SB Victory.  Protests were rumoured by the Kawaski team with regard to Honda using an open track day 5 days before the SB race. Because the practice was open to all, the issue was quickly dismissed.

600 Sportbike Race Report - Privateer Owen Weichel is on the pole after a heat race win on his American Backed Kyle Racing CBR600F4. Linnley Clark on the Suzuki Canada GSXR 600 starts 2nd, and Steve Crevier on the Honda Canada CBR 600 3rd.  The Flag drops and they're off. Frank Wilson on the Yamaha Canada R6 takes the lead from a standing start down the 1 mile long front straight. Into turn one, Clark a very bad start, Owen Weichel is in there, Michel Lavallee drafts by Clark, Weichel, and Wilson into turn one, he is carrying a tremendous amount of speed, he is running wide, Weichel dives under, Wilson Bobbles, and Clark is on his tail. Crevier slips through, Lavallee looks like he is going to recover and make the 2nd turn, NO!!!
he is down, Francis Martin off the the track, and four other racer avoid the incident on two, all look ok. Weichel on his CBR leads into three, Wilson 4 bikes back, Clark is challenging Wilsons R6. Clark looks to be on the move, Crevier is in 3rd, no, Crevier is in 4th, and teammate John Francios Cyr is in 3rd.

Honda, Yamaha & Suzuki are 1/2/3 heading into the 2nd Lap. Jordan Szoke is running in 7th behind a Kawasaki mounted ZX6R racer. Most of the 36 rider field is in tact. Clark all over Wilson, and challenging inside and outside, Clark is on the charge. Lead group of 5 have split from the pack as its Weichel, Wilson, Clark goes by Wilson, Wilson bobbles, Its Weichel Clark, Wilson Crevier Cyr and now Szoke is a distant 6th.

Lap 4 Clark is on the charge, he has caught Weichel and is applying pressure, Weichel is up for the challenge holding his ground, Clark tries the inside, tries to force his way again, down the long straight and the Suzuki must stay in the draft of the powerful CBR 600 of the privateer Weichel. Clark back on his tail in one, Crevier his closing up the gap, Cyr is falling off as has Frank Wilson and Jordan Szoke is now on the move closing the gap. Turn #2 and Szoke is in 4th. Weichel, Clark, Crevier and then Szoke as Clark is caught between the factory and privateer Hondas. Kawasakis aren't getting up to speed, and Jeff Williams and Neil Jenkins are filling out the top 10. Clark Bobbles trying to get on the power and dart past Weichel, he runs wide and has lost alot of ground on the leader. Crevier close up to Clark with Szoke in tow.

Lap 8 Weichel still is in control, he has yet to be passed for lead.  Clark is still trying hard, and the #1 plate holder is running out of tricks on his GSXR 600. Crevier comes through the esses, and looks ready to make a move on Clark, the Bustop (chicane), and up the inside of Clark, now its Weichel, Crevier, Clark, and Szoke. That's what Honda wanted from the veteran. Infact three Veterans lead are at the front of this 600 race with the youngster Szoke enjoying the view.

Lap #9 The Yamahas are out of contention and falling back, Linnley Clark is maintaining distance with Crevier down the front straight, and its Weichels very fast CBR that is getting away. Szoke closes up on Clark at the end of the front straight and he is smelling blood. He can't do anything on 1 and Clark is back at Crevier, into 2 and Clark is trying again to get back in this race for the lead. Through the ESSES and its Szoke making up the ground on the front 3 again, Szokes got the momentum,
into the Bustops and he does a textbook pass on Clark, exactly like Crevier did the previous lap.

Its Honda 1/2/3 with Weichel the privateer fighting off the rival Honda teams of Alain Labrosse and Kevin Graham. Szoke is now blanketing Crevier, and stuffing him, both riders are messing each other up and Weichel is getting away. Crevier isn't letting him past, Szoke again on the outside, nowwhere to go, both riders heads are down and now, they are right back up to Weichel.

Last Lap and Weichel again grabs distance on Crevier down the front straight. Its Szoke losing ground, hard on the brakes at the end of the straight and Szoke has made it all back, The three riders are now nose to tail. Crevier out of the ESSES and has the speed on Weichel going toward the busstop, but has Jordan with him, THREE WIDE!!! THREE WIDE in the CHICANE, it can't happen, someones going down, Szoke is odd man out, Crevier Passes Weichel in the Chicane, Weichel half a bike length Back, SZOKE is across the grass and comes back on the track, bike is bucking and bouncing on the pavement, HES GOING DOWN, He's bouncing right behind Crevier, he's somehow got control, just before the carosel, Weichel back up Crevier on in the Carosel into the lead, Crevier back on Weichel into the last turn, Weichel cuts the throttle, CREVIER HITS WEICHELS REAR WHEEL, smoke blasting, bike is going wide and straight into the concrete wall, it looks ugly for Crevier, Szoke nips into Second, Crevier rides the wall and recovers, Weichel charges to the finish line, Szoke 2nd, and Crevier 3rd. Clark finishes a distant 4th.

Post Race Quotes.

Szoke: "I had to get by in the chicane but there wasn't room, so I knew I was heading for the grass, then when the bike jumped back on the track it was just bucking and weaving. Then I got back in shape at the carousel and heading into the last corner I had to brake because the guys were going so slow, then I saw smoke and backed off, well I had to brake myself and I thought Crevier was hitting the wall for sure. Both my rims are bent and the tires were deflated by the time I got into the pits."

Crevier: "I rode really well. We don't need any Jackasses here. Bring it on fat boy." (With regard to the race winner)

Owen Weichel: "Everything went well today. I hope to come back to do Mosport. Crevier got underneath me in the bustop and I found enough room in the Carousel to get through."

Notes:

Creviers team launched an official protest but the results stood.  Weichels bike Dynoed the highest of the top 4 reaching 104.3 at the rear.

Parts Canada Superbike Race # 2 - Calgary, Race City Speedway

On Pole is Jordan Szoke on his Honda RC51. Next to him is Mike Taylor on his Kawasaki 900 Superbike. Starting from the 3rd Spot is Steve Crevier, back from the AMA on his RC51 Honda. And filling out the front row is #1 Plate Holder, Francis Martin on his Kawasaki ZX7RR Superbike.

The Flag drops and again its Mike Taylor with a blistering start, Benoit Pilons R1 is up to 2nd from his 2nd row start, quickly is passed heading into turn #1, its Taylor Kawasaki, Trombino Yamaha R1, Linnley Clark up from the 2nd Row on his GSXR 750 Suzuki nicknamed Brutus, then further back its Steve Crevier on the RC 51 followed by Jordan Szoke on the 2nd RC 51.

Turn # 3 and Crevier on the RC 51 has undressed Linnley Clark, and its Still Taylor, then Trombino, then Crevier, Clark and Szoke as the Top 5 break away from the field by the 5th turn. Its Kawasaki 9R then Yamaha R1, then Honda RC51 then Suzuki GSXR 750.

Crevier is on the move and Szoke is testing Linnley Clark. Down the front straight and Taylor leads Crevier over Trombino and Clarks GSXR 750 is a rocket. Szoke is still in 5th and # 1 plate hold Francis Martin is a distant 6th in only one lap.

Szoke gets by Clark on turn #2 putting him down to 5th. Trombino is hunting at Crevier and Jordan is now onto Trombinos tailpiece. Top 5 can be covered by a blanket and they are booking off. Crevier is sticking it to Taylor, and their is impact, Crevier is fighting his way through the left, and now into the right Taylor is exchanging the paint back with his Brother in Law Crevier. Taylor can't hold on and Crevier holds the line, Trombino now threatening Taylor, and Szoke is watching, heading onto the front straight and Crevier Leads, followed by Taylor, Trombino, Szoke and Linnley Clark has not lost about 4 bike lengths on the leaders.

Down the straight and Taylors bike is fast. He reels in Crevier and brings Trombino with him, Szoke is in tow about 1 bike length back as the leaders go 3 wide into turn one. Its Crevier on the brakes and Trombino tries the outside, Taylor holds his ground and the order is the same, Crevier, Taylor, Trombino and Szoke with Linnly Clark picking up the rear. Francis Martin is leading the 2nd wave some 3 seconds back already. The Front Runners have already shattered the lap record as the top 4 are all under it.

Heading into turn #3 and Szoke goes up the inside of Trombino, and yes, he takes the position, its now 3 Canadian Superbike Champions in a row as Crevier with 4 leads Taylor with 2 whom leads Szoke with 1 and Frank Trombino is showing his incredible talent, running up front with these guys. Unretired Linnley Clark hasn't ridden a Superbike in 5 years but is going at a very brisk pace, but he cannot run with the leaders.

Exiting the bustop and into the keyhole Taylor takes the lead from Crevier. Taylors bike is a 170hp missile down the front straight and he is pulling away from Creviers RC51. 7 Lengths heading into one and Crevier closes on the brakes while holding off Szoke. Trombino is keeping contact with the leaders and is within striking distance of any of the other 3 racers. Heading toward turn #2 and Taylor now has a 5 bike advantage and appears to be pulling away. Taylor is getting huge slides  exiting on the power. Into turn 4 and Taylors lead is now 8 bikes and he seems to be wanting to make a break from these guy. Last race the RC51sreeled him in and it looks like he's not about to let it happen again.

Heading into turn 5 and Taylor is flying. HOLY (!@$#)@ Taylor HIGHSIDES BIGTIME!!!! Huge Black mark and off he goes, the bike is wicked spinning down the track toward turn #6 which is quite some distance from turn # 5. Trombino goes past Szoke in turn #5, SZOKE IS ON THE BRAKES HARD, Crevier is past the spinning top of Taylors Kawasaki, SZOKE ENDOS AT SPEED and has nowhere to go, Trombino is now past Taylors Spinning Motorcycle, heading into turn #6, NO!!! TAYLORS BIKE FRONT WHEEL COMES AROUND AND TAKES OUT TROMBINO From behind heading into the turn. TROMBINO is AIRBORNE!!! The Yamaha is Cartwheeling off the track. Its is thrashing its self and gaining more momentum as it heads towards the wall. This bike has some gymnastics happening. What action, what a change in the race. What a wreck. Both racers are up and appear ok, even before their bikes have stopped motion.  Crevier is now gone and has an 8 to 10 bike lead on Szoke. Linnley Clark has inhereted 3rd and reigning Superbike Champion Francis Martin is now in 4th and is closing on the veteran. This looks like the closest battle on the race track along with the battle for 5th place between Benoit Pilons R1 and J.F. Cyr and his CBR 929.

Wow, Szoke had pulled some amazing manouvers to avoid the incident. So its a new Race with Hondas 1&2 again like the 1st race now that both Kawasaki and Yamaha crashed out of the lead group.  Linnley Clark is 20 lengths back of Szoke for 3rd, and Pilon is fighting with former teammate Cyr for 5th. Behind Cyr it is the Kawasakis of Neil Jenkins and Jeff Williams on 7RRs followed by American Racer Larry Denning on his Yamaha R1 in 9th. Csaba Werner is running in 10th now racing his 1999 ZX9R Kawasaki, after having crashed the ex Szoke CBR 900 Erion Honda in Race #1.  Just a few laps to go and it looks like Crevier has this one in the bag. Its Crevier and Szoke and then Clark holding off a charging Martin. And on the straight, does Linnleys bike ever have some HPs on Martins. 2 Laps to go and Szoke has no closed in on Crevier to within 1 1/2 bikes. He appears very smooth and has simply chipped away at Crevier little by little. Into the Bustop and Szoke takes a look but Crevier shuts the door. Honda Canada must be worried about these two bikes taking one another out. They are Hondas Bikes, but they are ridden by racers on two separate teams. Szoke is pressuring Crevier, but not forcing the issue. Pilon and Cyr are still hard pressed for 5th. Crevier can't shake Szoke and Szoke appears faster. Szoke now tries up turn 6 and time is running out. Crevier shuts the door again. Szoke is not getting this without a fight. Jordan tries the Busstop and then the Keyhole, but he just can't get past Crevier.

Szoke on the front straight and has a look and comes out of the draft along side Crevier on the outside going into Turn #1. Szoke can't make the pass and Crevier outbrakes Szoke again. This is not like the last race in which Szoke consistently outbraked Steve going into Turn #1.

Szoke now into the esses, and tries inside and outside but he doesn't have it. Crevier is still leading into the bustop then toward the keyhole just before they hit the front straight on the last lap. Pilon is out, Pilon has a mechanical and retires from 5th with one lap to go.

Onto the front straight, its Crevier and Szoke, and Szoke has great drive onto the front straight, Clark is fending off Martin for 3rd and Cyr is now a solid 5th.

Szoke is staying in Creviers draft, heading into to turn one after the 1k long straight and its SZOKE, SZOKE has went up the inside of turn one like we have seen him do so many times here before. Szoke is now pulling away from Crevier and they have just encountered Traffic. Jordan is getting the best of the breaks and Crevier is falling further behind. Heading toward the Chequered flag it is Szoke by 4 lengths, then Crevier then Clark, then Martin, then Cyr on his DOT spec CBR 929. Jordan Szoke takes the win, establishing himself as a frontrunner again, and rectifying the disaster of 1999 at Race City Speedway.

Quotes

A very winded Linnley Clark: " I saw the crash and I hope Frank and Mike are ok. They were both faster than me today, but maybe they were taking more risks, I don't know. I was taking as many risks as I dare. Scott Miller built this Suzuki and it's and animal. I just have to tame it. And these things were delivered from Japan- the two up in front of me, they don't have alot of work- they just ride em, I figured I am doing more work than both of them together to get here."

Steve Crevier: "Yeah, Mikes ok, it was pretty nasty, to much power down.  I rode hard and Jordan just had it on my today."

Jordan Szoke: "Did an endo trying to miss Mikes bike because it was sliding on the track like a prairie dog (Small animal that runs across Race City Speedway frequently to get splattered). Then Trombino went around me and smoked it, but he is ok, which is great. I have always had the edge on most people here and I feel I let myself down here last year and I want to show I am strong cornering the bike and sliding the bike and that I am strong physically too."

Mike Taylor: "I thought it was going to be a long race keeping that pace. Then the back end came around in an instant, I could see the back of Steves Leathers in the air from where I was, so"

Frank Trombino: "Got the suspension right, saving my energy till the end and then this happens."

Francis Martin: " 3rd in Championship, seasons not over, Going to St. Eustache next and I can win it. It is my Home track. I will do it.
