Mosport Park, Mosport
Ontario
Location: 1 hour drive east of Toronto
Date: July 21-23Last years winner:
Jordan Szoke, Honda CBR 900.
Background: Mosport is one of the most
challenging and storied road racing venues in North America. The highspeed undulating 2.45
mile ciruit has hosted both major and international events. Mosport staged Canadas only
round of the Grand Prix World Championship in 1967. In the late 70s the track attracted
the 750cc world Championship and more recently hosted the World Superbike Championship.
Mosport was also the site of the 1st Superbike Race in Canada.
With its fast corners and roller coaster
quality, Mosport rewards the bravest or riders. Turns like the downhill, off camber Corner
2 and the sweeping tunnel like Turn 4 are the surest test of testosterone in the series,
and distinguish Mosport as not just a great riders track, but also a spectating gem as
well.
Recent updates to Mosport have widened the dangerous downhill turn #4 sweeper, often
referred to as the chute which had swept along side concrete walls within feet of the
track, alongside a thick treeline and then down underneath a pedestrian bridge.
The trees have been cleared, the bridge is gone and the concrete moved further back. All
these alterations will change the racers perspective from previous years here.
Who's Hot - Honda: Honda Canada Racers Jordan Szoke and Steve Crevier are 1st and
3rd in the Championship. The dominated at the fast Calgary Race City speedway running
1&2 throughout the two races their and it is expected that RC51s will repeat on the
fast Mosport Circuit. Jordan Szoke is last years Race Winner and pole sitter. Jean
Francios Cyr on his Alain Labrosse CBR 929 may well get into the top 5. Kawasaki:
Francis Martin isn't the #1 plate holder for nothing. He was humbled at Calgary, and
fought back at ST Eustache. He made up alot of ground in the Championship points and now
finds himself as a strong favourite to retake the championship points lead. Francis Martin
and Jordan Szoke battled hard here last year with Martin settling for a conservative 2nd.
Expect a very strong performance from Kawasakis #1 ZX7RR rider. Michael Taylor on his
170HP ZX9R is quite possibly still the fastest man in Canada that hasn't won a race. He
finished 3rd last year after starting from the back of the grid. Yamaha: Benoit
Pilon and Frank Trombino are the front runners on the Factory Yamaha R1 equipment. Pilon
is coming off a strong 3rd place finish at his home track and always goes well at Mosport.
Frank Trombino
is showing that he may just be Yamahas #1 racer of the future. He could very well win this
weekend. Suzuki: Linnley Clark. Well who else? Suzuki has all their eggs in one
Basket. Linnley is Suzukis man. He has remained competitive all season and made the box at
Calgary. he sits 4th in the championship by being both fast and consistent.
Suprises - Well we could have a few at
Mosport. American Larry Denning has been competeting in each Canadian round and the
Shawnee. Ka. racer may find the fast sweeping Mosport corners more comfortable for his
Yamaha R1 equipment. Francios Dumas has shown well in each round this year, and might just
up his efforts another notch to get into the top 5. Reigning RACE regional Champion
Csaba Werner could well be a threat on either the Ex Szoke CBR900 (which won here last
year) or his well
developed Kawasaki ZX9R. Csabas had some bad results this year, but he has the ability to
get on the podium.
Who's Not - Jordan Szoke/Steve Crevier.
Both Honda racers have been injured in non
Canadian National Races. Crevier injured his ankle in a regional race before the last
national, and now Jordan Szoke is sporting a cast on his left arm after an early morning
crash during practice of the Mid Ohio AMA national. It is not known whether he will be
able to race this weekend.
