World SuperBike 2000 - Round 6 - Hockenheim - Race 2
| Can Bayliss do it again? Bayliss got a great launch again and led them around the 1st bend with Edwards right up his clacker, followed by Yanagawa, Corser & Chili. Yanagawa hit the front through the Ostkurve, the field is still very tightly packed and Aaron Slight is much closer to the front in this race. Bayliss back to 4th as Edwards takes 2nd and Corser 3rd. Slight in 5th, followed by Haga. Bayliss gets past Corser and back up in to 3rd, Edwards hits the front just before they enter the Ostkurve for the 2nd time around. The American looks as though he is going to try and make a break on the rest of the field, somehow I don't think he will do it. Slight past Corser for 4th. Lap 3 and Edwards still leads from Yanagawa, Bayliss, Haga, Slight, Chili & Corser. Bayliss up in to 2nd after putting a great move on Yanagawa but Edwards is stretching out a tiny lead and set the fastest time on lap 2. Bayliss will have to try and get away from Yanagawa so he can put his head down and catch Edwards. The back end of Bayliss' bike looks very loose even this early in the race! Colin's Honda looks to be on rails. Anthony Gobert has to retire with machine failure again in what must be a thoroughly disappointing weekend for the Bimota team after their encouraging start to the season. Bayliss set the fastest lap on the 3rd time around and is slowly catching Edwards. Yanagawa and Haga are battling for 3rd, Chili a little further back. Haga got in front of Yanagawa as they crossed the line to start lap 5. Bostrom 11th, Crafar 15th. Edwards still has a little lead on Bayliss but Troy has an even bigger gap on Haga in 3rd. The Japanese Yamaha rider will have to work hard to bridge that gap. 10 laps to go and Bayliss has closed on Edwards a little, Haga has broken away from Yanagawa as the Kawasaki rider starts to come under attack from Chili, Slight & Corser. Bayliss is still closing on Edwards but he is making that Ducati work very hard as it wiggles itself around the corners. Yanagawa went through the speed trap to record a slipstream assisted 313kph! Bayliss has the rear end of that Ducati swaying in and out of line on the way on to the straight and is now right on the back of Edwards. Haga is chasing down the leaders, now only 1 second behind. Bayliss showed Colin a wheel but the American responded and Bayliss lost a little ground. Yanagawa set the fastest lap as he chased down the leaders. Now the Yamaha pilot is right on the tail of Bayliss as the battle for the lead becomes a 3-way fight. Chili past Yanagawa for 4th and also trying to close on the leaders. Haga nearly has his front touching Bayliss' rear and surely must take him soon, lets hope it doesn't end in tears..... The battle between Bayliss and Edwards for 2nd has allowed Edwards to escape a little. Haga's Yamaha seems to get fantastic drive off the turns, but Bayliss seems to be able to keep in front of him by sliding that Ducati all over the place. More people have joined the fray, Yanagawa and Chili are now right on the tail of Haga! Edwards now has half a second on Bayliss, Chili is on a charge. Bayliss had some monster front end wobbles in to the Ostkurve and lost some places. Yanagawa up in to 2nd, Haga 3rd, Bayliss 4th & Chili 5th. Edwards is not getting away and the pace seems to be even hotter than race 1. Chili takes Bayliss for 4th and they are 1.7 seconds behind the leader. 5 laps to go and Yanagawa hit the front, Haga took Edwards, Yanagawa blew his motor which made Haga button off and Edwards goes back in to the lead. Dramas. Edwards, Haga, further back is Bayliss & Chili. Haga is right on the tail of Edwards but the leading duo have opened up quite a gap on Bayliss & Chili who are battling for 3rd. America versus Japan is how this battle is going to shape up. Haga gets some great drive off the Ostkurve with 4 laps to go but Edwards slips past him again at the end of the straight. Chili takes Bayliss for 3rd but they are out of the race for the lead as Edwards and Haga have nearly 2 seconds on them. Haga and Edwards side by side down the straight, Haga gets the run out of the corner, Edwards seems to have a hidden nitrous button on that Honda. When he wants to pas on the straights he seems to be able just pull out of the draft and piss past any one! Haga is really picking the bike up off the turns to get a harder drive out of the bends and he seems to be able to take a much tighter line than the Honda in any of the bends but Edwards still holds the lead. Chili and Bayliss look as though they may be closing on the leaders, could we end up with a 4-way battle? I reckon Haga will get under Edwards on the final run to the straight and take the win. Will I be right? Haga hits the front by taking another inside line through the Ostkurve with 2 laps to go but Edwards just hits that Nitrous again and goes past. Chili and Bayliss have really joined the battle again. There is no telling what is going to happen now, Haga has the lead from Edwards, Bayliss & Chili. Last lap - Haga has a bit of a gap, can he hold it? It looks as though he just might, Edwards looks to be struggling to get the power to the ground as he tries to hold off Bayliss and Chili. Bayliss under Edwards through the chicane in the most fantastic move, but Edwards gets better drive and goes back in to 2nd, Edwards under Haga, Haga back in front, Chili past Bayliss for 3rd and that is it how it is on the run off the turn to the finish line. Haga takes a fantastic win. |
