WORLD SUPERBIKES - PHILLIP ISLAND - SUNDAY

World Superbike - Race 2

56,000 spectators saw Edwards and Chili get away best but Colin made the best of that to start opening a slight gap.

As they crossed the line to commence lap 2 the race order was - Edwards, Chili, Crafar, Aoki, Haga, Borja, Fujiwara, Corser.  Both Fogarty and Gobert were struggling in 14th and 15th.

On lap 3 Haga started a bit of a charge and took Aoki on the inside.  By lap 4 Edwards had a 10 second gap on Chili in 2nd.

Foggy ran up the rear of Ulm on lap 5 and was laying motionless by the side of the circuit.  At that part of the track the bikes are doing over 200kph and the motionless Foggy was a scary sight.  We heard around 10 minutes later that he was unconscious but breathing by himself.

By lap 8 Haga had took Chili for 2nd and went past Edwards on lap 10.

Race order as they started lap 12 - Corser, Haga, Chili, Edwards, Yanagawa.  Gobert in 10th, Bostrom 13th.

Corser had some serious back marker problems on lap 14 as a slow rider cut across his line in an alarming fashion.  Edwards' intermediate tyres were obviously getting well shagged on the drying track as he was really starting to lose time.  Lavilla took 4th from Edwards.  Gobert up to 9th.

The rain started falling again on lap 16 causing the race to be red flagged and results declared.  McKay was the only wildcard rider to finish race 2 and he came 19th.

Shortly after the race finished we heard that Foggy was still suffering some after-effects from the concussion and had a suspected broken humerus (upper arm).  He is likely to be out of action for at least 6 weeks.  Clinica Mobile doctors have said that a CAT scan will be necessary in order to exclude the possibility of any cervical fractures.

Will this be retirement for Foggy? - Or will he come back more determined than ever?

World Superbike - Race 1

Edwards got the initial jump on the wet track but was quickly passed by Gobert and Corser who started clearing out immediately.   Corser fell at the 'hayshed' shortly after but Gobert was looking hot.

By the time he crossed the line to start lap 2 he led by an incredible 9 seconds!  End of lap 1 - Gobert, Borja, Chili, Fogarty, Edwards.

As they started lap 3 Gobert had a 21 second lead, Anthony is taking the piss - this is jaw on the deck material.  Chili fell on lap 2 and Aussie wildcard Maxwell looked strong in 6th.

A 31 second lead for Gobert by the end of lap 3.   37.5 by the end of lap 4.

Maxwell passed Foggy for 5th and Dave Simpson (MCNEWS.COM.AU columnist) had a huge moment when setting up for a pass on Foggy but held it together.

40.5 second lead for Gobert by the end of lap 5.   Maxwell up in to 3rd.

Gobert 46 seconds in front by lap 7.  Borja dumped it and caused Maxwell to take some evasive action in order to avoid the ensuing carnage and in doing so lost a heap of places.  Gobert, Pedercini, Aoki, Foggy, Simpson, Guareschi, Maxwell.  Edwards is in 10th.

On lap 8 Anthony lapped Haga and Bostrom!  This is incredible no words can describe it, I have to go and bang my head on a wall to see if this is really happening.

The track started drying slightly on lap 10 and the gap between Anthony and the rest of the field started becoming static.  Foggy started closing the gap slightly, even though it was still well over 40 seconds!

Rain started falling on lap 13 so if Anthony can stay upright he has this thing wrapped up and probably the biggest winning margin ever known in World Championship racing.   Unfortunately Dave Simpson fell at this stage of the race.

Lap 16 - Gobert, Fogarty (41 seconds back), Guareschi, Pedercini, Maxwell, Ulm, Edwards.  Haga unlapped himself from Gobert as the track started drying again.

Lap 17 saw Anthony ease off and use his head to ensure he kept it upright.  Foggy closed the gap down to 32 seconds as they commenced lap 18.   Hold on Anthony.

And hold on he did.  Race winner one very ecstatic Anthony Gobert.

Quotes

Colin Edwards - "I was happy with my finish we went for intermediate tyres but a hard compound. Our plan was going great until it started raining again. When the dry line appeared the rear tyre hooked up well but the front felt a bit heavy.  As we got towards the end of the race I just concentrated on holding onto fifth position. I knew there was just enough of a dry line on that last lap to hold off Ulm and Lavilla and keep fifth.  My only other problem was at turn 10 where Borja crashed and his fuel was slowly moving down the track. Each time through there I was taking a tighter line."

Simon Crafar  - was forced to retire from the race on the 15th lap when rain began to fall once more, wrecking the New Zealanders chances of using his rear slick tyre choice to the full.  "I had to take it really easy in the opening laps, it was scary out there and very slippery.  Even when the rain stopped, in the early part of the race, it took too long for the tyre to start working so I knew it was going to be an uphill task.  We were undecided at the start about which tyres to choose.  We went for a front intermediate and a rear slick - and paid the penalty for the gamble."

Unfortunately Andrew Pitt ran straight up the back of Ruben Xaus on the main straight and destroyed the front of his fairing in the process.  Xaus was able to continue but Pitt was forced to retire. "That was real frightening! I had no chance, because the bike stopped right in front of me and the impact was heavy and took me up in the air.  I was lucky not to crash there.  I have tried to restart to give a go to my fans but they didn't allow me.  I'm very disappointed.

11 laps in the rain came down and forced a red flag situation.   The race was re-started after a 15 minute break.  Adam Fergusson put in a great performance to finish up 4th.

Race winner Whitham - "I stuck my neck out on the early laps to try and fight my way up the field.  I knew I had to or get stuck behind a lot of slower riders and that would have been that.  I have to qualify better for races but the way things turned out today couldn't have been more perfect.   For the last few laps I just made sure I cruised round and got the to the flag in the lead.  A perfect start to the (World SuperSport) season."

Karl Muggeridge came to grief on lap 8 after running wide and losing traction on a white line at Southern Loop.  "There's not much to say. I'm very disappointed. I just touched the white line and before I new I was down. Wished we could have taken some points with us to the next round," said a disappointed Muggeridge.

250 Production - Race 1

Rain started falling as the 250 production field as they assembled on the grid after a dry warm up lap, not just light drizzle but a good shower.

Derryn Simmons fell on the first lap after the bike turned around on him.  Taplin was leading and had built a little gap over Synon and Gobert by lap 2.

Gobert took Synon for 2nd and then Taplin for the lead on lap 3.

Lap 6 saw the leaders start to lap some of the slower riders and Carter started flying, in 1 lap he seemed to have come from nowhere before going straight to the lead in the penultimate lap.

Aaron Gobert couldn't take him back and had to settle for 2nd, Taplin 3rd with Chris Synon coming home 4th on the highest placed RGV.
