WORLD SUPERBIKES 2000 - SUGO - SUNDAY

SuperBike - Race 2

Haga got the jump again and luckily they all got through the 1st corner with no dramas this time.  Bayliss ended up in the dirt again before the end of the 1st lap, bugger...........

Corser 6th, Bostrom 18th, Gobert 20th.    Corser up to 5th on lap 2.  Yoshikawa was closing on Haga and Gobert ended up in the wall looking very unhealthy indeed.  It looked as though the bike hit his legs when they went in to the wall after the bike had done some flips. Very worrying indeed. (Later news - Anthony has a fractured shoulder and possibly a broken hand).

Haga had Yoshikawa right up his tail-pipe with a little gap back to Edwards and Izutsu in 3rd and 4th respectively.  Corser still 5th.

Chili had some bike trouble and headed to the pits to try and find the fault but ended up going for an early shower.

Lap 7 - Haga, Yoshikawa, Edwards, Izutsu, Corser, Ryo.

Edwards started closing the gap to Yoshikawa and Haga on lap 10 and looked to be pacing himself and preserving his tyres.  After Race 1 he said that he had shagged his tyres early on and couldn't push hard towards the end of the race. It looks as though he is saving something for the end in this race.

Haga started to get quite a lot of wheelspin and Yoshikawa squeezed past him on lap 11.  Edwards got past Haga on lap 12 as the Yamaha was struggling with rear end grip.  Izutsu set the fastest lap and took Haga for 3rd.    Corser still 5th with Ryo right on his tail.  Bostrom in 13th.

Yoshikawa looked to be also starting to suffer with rear end grip.  Izutsu started lining up Edwards and will surely attempt a pass sometime soon.  Yanagawa is on a charge from 7th and if current pace is anything to go on will get past Ryo and Corser sometime in the next few laps.

Lap 17 of 25 - Yoshikawa, Izutsu, Edwards, Haga, Corser, Yanagawa, Ryo.

Race 1 winner Izutsu took Yoshikawa for the lead on lap 18 and looked to have the pace to clear off in to the distance but Yoshikawa looked determined not to let him get away, even though he was clearly suffering from a lack of grip.

5 laps to go - Izutsu, Yoshikawa, Edwards, Haga, Corser, Yanagawa.  Bostrom 13th.  Corser was given the hurry up by Yanagawa and had responded well to up his pace and pull out some time on the Kawasaki rider.

And that is how they ended up as they crossed for the chequered flag.

Izutsu with a surprise double on a Kawasaki to really put the cat among the pigeons in the manufacturers championship standings.  The 28 year old Japanese rider from Osaka will surely be on the Sake tonight.

Yanagawa - "I still got that chattering in the front and the rear started sliding again very early. It felt like skating every time entering a corner. Then I was catching up with Corser but had a highsider about 5 laps to the end and my confidence to the rear tyre was finally gone and the gap was too big."

Quotes - More Later

Corser - "For race two we changed tyres and used the same as Izutsu used and it was definitely an improvement. I lost a bit of ground at the start, when I got pushed off line by some local rider and after that it was always going to be a bit of a struggle catching up the leaders. I had to ride very hard in the corners, but I was pretty happy to get fifth place. On the cool down lap at the final chicane the bike felt a bit tight so I slowed to have a look at the front end and the bike came to an abrupt stop it fell. I didn't hit the ground at all; it was just a bit strange, that's all. If we hadn't had such good results in the first two races I'm sure that we'd all been wrapped to get a ninth and a fifth here in Japan. But we're in third place in the championship and I don't think anybody expected that at this stage."

Edwards - "I'm happy with third, a lot happier than I was after the first race. At least I recognised what messed me up in the first race and we were able to put that right. There wasn't a lot I could have done in that second race about Izutsu and Yoshikawa.  Those wild cards have got absolutely nothing to lose and that's how they ride, I think even Haga recognised that. I'm happy to take points away from Sugo, always. In a different frame of mind, on another day, I could have given them a good run. It's onto Donington now, I want two wins there, nothing less."

SuperBike - Race 1

Haga led in to the first corner and escaped the 1st corner carnage as 5 riders went down!  Fujiwara, Serizawa, Bayliss (AUS) and Guareschi were unable to rejoin the race due to damage suffered in that 1st corner melee.

On lap 2 Haga led from Chili, Edwards, Izutsu & Corser.

Haga, followed by Chili, Edwards, Izutsu, Kitagawa, Ryo, Corser, Yoshikawa on lap 4.  Ryo set the fastest lap and Izutsu went past Edwards for 3rd on this lap.  This track looks so technical.

Kawasaki mounted Izutsu looks to be a man on a mission - he went past Chili on lap 5 and set out after Haga.  Ryo got past Edwards and immediately pulled out a gap on the American rider.

Izutsu got past Haga on lap 8.  Race order - Izutsu, Haga, Chili, Ryo, Edwards.  Corser 9th.

Ryo took Chili under brakes a lap later and started looking to put one under Haga, he succeeded with 15 laps to go.  Corser now in 10th, Gobert 19th.  Ryo (Suzuki) was on the hunt for race leader Izutsu but had a second to make up.  They seem to be on the extreme edge of the tyre on nearly every corner here.

Izutsu responded to Ryo's challenge to stretch the gap to 1.9 seconds on lap 13.

By lap 17 Izutsu had opened up a 4 second gap to Ryo and looked to have it all wrapped up.  Ryo looks as though he may have trouble holding on to his 2nd place as he is being harassed closely by Haga and Chili. Sure enough as I typed that last sentence Haga stuck it underneath him to take that 2nd position.  Chili was looking for a way past Ryo too.

Yanagawa's Kawasaki expired on lap 18.

Race order lap 22 out of 25 - Izutsu, Haga, Ryo, Chili, Edwards, Kitagawa.  Chili snuck under Ryo just before the chicane to take 3rd place.

Quotes

Corser - "I was disappointed with the first race because I felt we had a good chance of a good result if everything worked out OK. After a few laps the rear tyre started going off and after that it was just a case of going as hard as I could without crashing. The track and general temperatures were quite different to qualifying and tyre choice was always going to be a bit of a lottery."

Bayliss - "I couldn't do much about the fall in race 1.  I was leaning over into the corner when a rider came in from the outside and hit me. When I was on the ground I also felt a bike go over my back. And in race 2, the same rider hit me at high speed and I banged my head against the bike's handlebar but I managed to take my Ducati into the run-off area. I feel sorry for all the guys in the team who worked hard to make me feel at home".

Bostrom - "I just don't understand all this madness going into the first corner, a position gained is nothing in such a long race. I found myself in the middle of the group which was sliding around on the track and I couldn't do anything about it. Race 2 was better and I tried to make up some places, but I had problems with grip at the rear which meant that I couldn't get close to the riders in front of me. It's a pity because the bike was going well and I had hoped for a better result".

Casoli was finally relegated to 3rd by Whitham a lap later, Jamie closed right up on Chambon immediately afterwards.  Muggeridge took Casoli for 3rd.

"I got stuck in that group and had a lot of headache all through the race. I could have probably passed a few guys in front of me but there were yellow flags all the way down to the places where I could have tried. So there wasn't much more possible for me today.", said Andrew.

Before the race the 24-year-old works Kawasaki rider was administered anti-inflammatory medication to ensure his blood remained thin as a safeguard against possible clotting. He also suffered headaches during the 25-lap race, a legacy of being knocked unconscious and flung into a gravel trap after his Kawasaki ZX-6R was struck by Japanese rider Noriyasu Numata in qualifying yesterday.

Karl Muggeridge was on the 1st Honda home - "I happy to take some points to the next round and we were the 1st Honda. But I'm also a bit disappointed, because I know it could have been better."

Late News - Curtain disqualified from his 6th place at post-race scrutineering as his engine would not start.
