That event was the first AMA National held in an indoor stadium. It was a revolutionary idea that worked. By the mid-1970s AMA Supercross came to the Astrodome and also met with great success. Since that time Supercross, held primarily in large indoor stadiums and a few outdoor stadiums, has blossomed to become one of the most popular forms of racing in all of motorsports. 

This Saturday, March 25, the Astrodome will host round 11 of the 16-race EA Sports Supercross Series.

Coming into the Houston race Team Chevy Truck Kawasaki rider Ricky Carmichael holds a solid 29-point lead over seven-time champ Jeremy McGrath and is in the midst of a seven-race winning streak. That streak is the second longest in Supercross history -- McGrath holds the record with 13 straight in 1996. 

With eight wins in 10 starts, Carmichael has already moved into 13th on the all-time AMA Supercross win list and has a real chance of cracking the top 10 before the year is over. This after having only one career victory to his credit prior to this season. Carmichael finished second in the Astrodome last year. 

With just six races remaining, time is running short for McGrath - the all-time AMA Supercross wins leader – to catch Carmichael. 

If McGrath manages to win Saturday it would mark his sixth win in the Astrodome and would give him the record for most wins in the stadium. Mark Barnett is tied with McGrath with five Astrodome Supercross victories, but Barnett raced in the era when two Supercross nationals were held in the Astrodome each year and he earned those five wins in just three seasons. McGrath first won Houston in 1994.
