American SuperBike 2001 - Round 7 - Loudon - Race

Eric Bostrom needed a victory to close in on AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike leader Mat Mladin in the series points. The 24-year-old Bostrom did exactly that, leading all 39 laps on his Kawasaki ZX7 and taking his first victory in the rain-delayed Loudon Classic.

Mladin, who dogged Bostrom the entire race, finished a close second while Suzuki team-mate Aaron Yates was a distant third. Bostrom closed to within 31 points of Mladin in the AMA Superbike point standings at the halfway point in the season.

I went faster today than I have all weekend,” said Bostrom, who earned his fourth-career AMA Superbike win. “Mat was pushing me and we were going super fast. He wasn’t letting up. On the last lap I just thought to myself ‘You’ve led this thing for 38 laps, don’t blow it now.’ I tried to protect the inside line and make sure he (Mladin) had to pass me on the outside and it worked out.”

Mladin and Bostrom where seldom more than a bike length apart for the duration of the race, with Mladin only taking the race lead briefly. The pair finished over 24 seconds clear of third placed Aaron Yates (Team Yoshimura Suzuki).

"It was a really good race out there today and I really enjoyed the battle with Eric," said Mladin afterwards. "We were able to do some pretty quick lap times and pull away from the other guys which was fine. The layout of the New Hampshire circuit makes it hard to put a pass on anyone and you pretty much finish where you start. Eric and I were running the same pace, so it was hard. I got by him briefly at Turn Three, but he got me back. It was a great race and the bike ran perfect. I can't complain."

Fellow Australian Anthony Gobert (Team Yamaha) was missing from today's race after suffering several injuries to his right arm after crashing during Friday's opening qualifying session.

Round eight of the championship will be held at Laguna Seca on July 8 and will be incorporated in the round of the Superbike World Championship, with the AMA Superbike race scheduled for Saturday.
