Helmets to sponsor the 2001 Australian Sidecar Championship |
|
Bruce Collins, ex sidecar racer and now manager of Bruce Collins Enterprises, the distributor for Lazer Helmets in Australia, has been named as the official sponsor for the 2001 Australian Sidecar Championship. The series is now to be referred to as the 'Lazer Helmets Australian Sidecar Championship'. The plan for this season is to hold a 3 round championship around August/September but final details are still being worked out. It is pretty much settled that both Adelaide and Brisbane will have a round and the remaining round will be either in New South Wales or Victoria but is yet to be decided. Two races for each round will consist of one race of about 20 kilometres in length with a second longer race of around 40 kilometres (good luck hanging on for that long swingers!). There will be both a Formula 1 (Modern) Championship and also a Formula 2 Championship but they will run concurrently. Organizers have been guaranteed a field of at least 20 sidecars at each round. What will please many of the sidecar boys (and girls) is the fact that there is $30,000 in prize money/travel allowances up for grabs in the championship, $10,000 per round. This is great news for the embattled Australian sidecar fraternity which have had a bit of an uphill battle of late and the fact that Lazer Helmets have committed to this as a 3-year deal gives sidecar racing a bright future in Australia. |
