2001 Australian SuperBike - Round 3 - Queensland Raceway - Race 2 - MCNEWS.COM.AU

Disaster once again for Alex Gobert as his bike refused to start on the grid and no amount of pushing by his team would get the Honda fired up. It proved very hard to start in a recent race at Phillip Island so this is not the first time it has happened. Alex was confident of doing very well today, well there is one thing for sure he will be well fired up for race 3 later this afternoon.

Giles and Coxhell got the run off the line but Giles sprinted away from Coxhell down the back straight and by the time they crossed the line to commence lap 2 Giles had already pulled out 1.5 seconds over Coxhell, Cudlin a further couple of tenths behind Coxhell and Rees the same gap behind Cudlin.

The end of lap 2 Giles had 2.3 seconds over Coxhell and is running away with this, nobody seems to have an answer to the Suzuki's power at this stop and go style Queensland Raceway.

Cudlin under Coxhell at the end of the back straight for 2nd, Cudlin seems to have the brakes this time, lets hope they don't go away like they did in race 1.

As they cross the line to start lap 4 Giles now has 3.1 seconds over Cudlin who has Coxhell right with him, Rees a couple of tenths behind in 4th, Stauffer 5th, Simpson 6th, Normoyle 7th.

The battle for 2nd is now 3-way with Cudlin, Coxhell and Rees going three wide into the turn at the end of the back straight, Rees through on Coxhell for 3rd. Cudlin has the complete braking system from the spare bike in the aim of making the brakes last the whole race.

As they commence lap 5 Giles has 3.4 seconds over Cudlin. Rees up into 2nd under brakes at the end of the back straight, Coxhell now all over the back of Cudlin.  As they start lap 6 Giles has 4.4 seconds on Rees who has Cudlin and Coxhell right with him.

Cudlin through on Rees under brakes at the end of the back straight to move back up into 2nd. Coxhell through under brakes on Rees at the next turn so the race order is now Giles a country mile ahead while Cudlin sits in 2nd from Coxhell and Rees.

As they start lap 7 Giles has over 5 seconds on his pursuers, Coxhell back up into 2nd and immediately starts pulling away from Cudlin and Rees. 4.8 seconds is the gap from Giles to Coxhell as they start the penultimate lap.

Coxhell has pulled over a second out of Cudlin who now has his team-mate Tony Rees right with him. Last lap - Giles still 4.8 seconds ahead of Coxhell who now has over 2 seconds on Cudlin. Giles pulls a mono over the line to celebrate a 4.6 second win over Coxhell, Cudlin 2.5 seconds further behind, then Rees, Stauffer, Normoyle, Simpson.
