2001 Australian SuperBike Championship - Round 5 - Oran Park - August 24/25/26 - Preview
| The
final round of the Shell Advance Australian SuperBike Championship is
being staged at Sydney's Oran Park circuit this weekend, 24th, 25th and
26th of August. Team Suzuki's Shawn Giles (281 pts.) has already wrapped up the series while Shepparton teenager Craig Coxhell (183 pts.) looks safe in 2nd spot with a 37 point buffer over New Zealand's Tony Rees (146 pts.) in 3rd position. But there are 76 points up for grabs over the weekend so Coxhell and Rees can't become too complacent otherwise Jamie Stauffer (129 pts.) could overhaul them. It comes as no surprise that the top 3 in the championship are the riders who have completed all the rounds. If you remember back to round 1 you will know that Shawn Giles and Team Suzuki were the only factory team to attend the Western Australian round. Yamaha's Craig Coxhell made his own way over and rode his own bike with no factory support to grab some valuable points. So the first of the riders who have not completed all rounds is Yamaha's Jamie Stauffer (129 pts.). Even though Damian Cudlin (127 pts.) has missed a full round he still lies in 5th. Damian will of course miss this last round due to the spinal injuries he sustained at Eastern Creek a couple of months ago. Damian was fitted with an upper body cast this week and will probably remain in hospital until Friday, all going well we will see Damian at the track on Sunday as a spectator. If Redwing HRC's Alex Gobert (98 pts.) has a reasonable weekend he looks good to overhaul Cudlin for a possible 5th place finish in the championship, if Stauffer has a disastrous weekend Gobert could possible even grab 4th. Jay Normoyle (93 pts.) should be safe to finish the series as leading privateer and probably 7th overall as his closest privateer competitor, David Simpson (85 pts.), broke his collarbone at Phillip Island last weekend and will miss this round. If Ballina Fireblade pilot Steven Fisher (77 pts.) has a great weekend he could possibly catch Normoyle for the honour of being top placed privateer. Wayne Maxwell (48 pts.) won a New South Wales 600 Title at Oran Park last weekend and is sure to figure strongly this weekend. Wayne has not scored many points this year due to some machine problems and a few crashes but when the big ZX-9R holds together he has shown he can run up the front, indeed I will be surprised if Wayne does not manage at least one podium finish this weekend. In 600 SuperSport Bringelly local Josh Brookes (167 pts.) only needs to score pole in order to wrap up the championship. It fairly much goes without saying that Josh will be the 2001 Australian SuperSport Champion. Team Suzuki's Daniel Stauffer (117 pts.) holds down 2nd spot but will have to fight off a determined Robbie Baird in order to hold that position. Baird won the NSW SuperBike Title at Oran Park last weekend and will be hard to beat this weekend. Jay Taylor (199 pts.) has wrapped up the 125 GP Championship but Andrew Brooks (139 pts.) will be eager to chase down Pat Galvin (148 pts.) for 2nd spot in the championship. Those three riders seem assured of a wildcard ride at the Australian GP in October but the battle will be on for young and old in order to grab 4th spot in the championship which also may score a wildcard at the GP. Cath Thompson (81 pts.) leads the charge for that 4th spot but will have her work cut out for her in order to hold off Michael Teniswood (74 pts.) and Western Australia's Peter Taplin (74 pts.). South Australia's Rudi Muller (67 pts.) also can't be ruled out. Early Lynch (142 pts.) looks set to take the 250 GP Championship while Terry Carter (102 pts.) will be trying to hold off Western Australia's Shane Smith (98 pts.). This will be Shane's first visit to the Oran Park circuit so Murray Jones (87 pts.) has a good chance of chasing Shane down for that 3rd spot in the championship, Mark Rowling (84 pts.) could also close them down. The battle will be fierce as the top 4 finishers in this class are likely to score a wildcard ride at the Australian GP in October. The C graders in the GP Championships have more money and prizes to fight over this weekend after motorcycle apparel manufacturer 'Teknic' joined forces with Turramurra Cyclery in order to boost the prize pool for the 'C' graders. Teknic will provide over $500 worth of product and trophies to the top three 'C' graders in 125 GP at Oran Park while Turramurra Cyclery are providing prize money and trophies to the top three 'C' graders in 250 GP. Mildura's Mick Kelly (137 pts.) has a good 30 point lead over Glenn Allerton (107 pts.) in 250 Production but Allerton was a man on a mission at Oran Park last weekend for the NSW Titles and will be pulling out all stops to close that gap to Kelly. Russell Holland (98 pts.) holds down 3rd spot and will be chased hard by Liam Magee (82 pts.). Ben Attard (79 pts.), Brent George (79 pts.) and Shepparton's Nick Henderson will all be fighting hard in the hope of gaining a few championship places. Head out to Oran Park this weekend to check out all the action and see the cream of Australia's young riding talent in action. Schedule |
