Castrol Honda British Supersport riders, John McGuinness and Kirk McCarthy, will both start tomorrow’s fifth round encounter at Brands Hatch from the front row of the grid after setting the second and fourth fastest times respectively in this afternoon’s rain-affected Superpole session.

Although the 2.6-mile GP circuit at Brands was dry, organisers declared the session ‘wet’ with the threat of heavy showers that had affected the morning qualifying session. Instead of one flying lap, the 12 fastest riders were given 40 minutes to complete a maximum of twelve laps.

With fourteen minutes and just two of his allotted laps remaining, McGuinness went third fastest and then improved to second place behind pole sitter Karl Harris. McCarthy saved his best lap for the end of the session and secured the final front row position with his penultimate lap.

“I tried for another lap,” said McCarthy afterwards, “but had a big slide coming out of Graham Hill bend that had me out of the seat. I thought I’d call it a day then.”

McGuinness was delighted with his performance, saying: “It was still a little damp at Dingle Dell mid-session so we were having to be careful. I thought I had a few laps left but second on the grid will do.”

Final qualifying times:
1 Karl Harris (Suzuki) 1m31.383s,
2 John McGuinness (Castrol Honda) 1:31.716,
3 Paul Young (Suzuki) 1:31.799,
