John McGuinness scored his first British Supersport victory in today’s fifth round encounter at Brands Hatch. His Castrol Honda team-mate, Kirk McCarthy, crossed the line in second place with Woolsey Coulter, on a Suzuki, third.

McCarthy, however, was later penalised for overtaking under the Pace Car, which emerged after a crash on lap two, relegating him to third place.

McGuinness’s debut win came after frantic last minute deliberations over tyre choice as light drizzle fell over the 2.6-mile GP circuit in Kent. With both Castrol Honda riders opting for intermediate Dunlops, the rain the held off allowing them to maximise their advantage.

“It was the right choice,” said McGuinness, 27, “and I pushed as hard as I could in the early laps in case it rained later. But it was my turn today. I’ve consistently been one of the quickest riders out there and it’s great to finally pull off a win.”

The result allowed McGuinness to secure second place in the championship points table while McCarthy consolidates his lead at the top to 25 points over his Castrol Honda team mate.

“It was a bit of a lucky dip with tyres before the race,” said the 32-year-old McCarthy, “but we went for intermediates to cover all possibilities with the weather. John got away well and I didn’t want to throw it away trying to go for the win.”
