John McGuinness finished in second
place in today’s ninth round British Supersport encounter at Cadwell
Park in Lincolnshire. Karl Harris won the 16-lap race with Rob Frost
third. McGuinness’s Castrol Honda team-mate and series leader, Kirk
McCarthy, retired with clutch problems in the early stages.
Starting from pole position, McGuinness led for the opening six laps
before a heavy crash involving Simon Andrews at Mansfield corner
brought out the Pace Car for four laps. When the race resumed, Harris
muscled his way past McGuinness along the ultra-fast Park Straight on
lap 12 and the Castrol Honda rider was forced to settle for second
place.
“I had a gear selection problem going into Hall bends,” said the
27-year-old, “but I was happy with the way I was able to get away at
the front. I was comfortable while leading and the CBR has been
working well all weekend. It sets me up nicely for Brands Hatch.”
McCarthy saw his championship lead reduced to seven points as a result
of his non-finish but the Australian was philosophical about the
result. “I was struggling to find a decent set-up to be honest,” he
said afterwards, “and the clutch problem is just one of those things
that happen from time to time. We’ll regroup this week and go all out
for a result next weekend.”
Llewellyn had this to say -
"We spent a lot of laps behind the pace car,
and the tyre temperature dropped dramatically, once
the pace car had gone back in and we got back up to speed, the bike
was sliding about all over the place. I had a couple of big moments,
which knocked my confidence a bit and forced me to slow the pace. I'm
very disappointed because Kirk didn't finish the race and I could have
made up more ground at the top of the table."
Another Australian, Kim
Ashkenazi, got off to
a bad start and slipped
back to 9th position on the first lap. Things then seemed to be
going well as he slipped into a faster race pace
before the pace car came out. After
3 odd laps following the pace car, the race resumed and with little
confidence in his cold tyres, Ashkenazi slipped from 7th back to 9th
again. By race end, Ashkenazi had worked his way back up to 6th place,
and was challenging for 5th place as they
crossed the line.
“I am quite pleased with the weekend’s results as I
equalled my qualifying time in the race on race tyres. I knew it would
be a tough race here as the track is very technical and I honestly
thought I would have struggled a little more. And, yet again, for all
of us (Team E.T.I. Elec-Track / MSS Performance) it (the result) is
another boost going into the latter part of the season.”,
said Ashkenazi.

In front of a bumper 33,500 strong crowd,
Yorkshire's David Jefferies forced his
V&M Racing R1 Yamaha to the front of the field to push his
championship rivals throughout the entire sixteen-lap race, before the
outcome was decided at the penultimate corner of the final lap.
After losing out in the drag race away from the line, Jefferies moved
up to fourth place on lap two before taking third a lap later. Then on
lap six he forced his way through into second position to hound race
leader, Suzuki mounted John Crockford.
"I pushed and pressured him for the remainder of the race, but I
didn't want to rush past because I didn't have the power to pull
away," said Jefferies. "I had a plan to make a move at the hairpin on
the last lap, but he ran in real hot, and lost control right in front
of me, I gratefully nipped past to take the win."
