Canadian SuperBike 2001 - Round 2 - Preview

Round #2 Race City Motorsports Park, Calgary, Alberta.
Last Years Superbike Winner: Jordan Szoke, Honda RC51
Notes for 2001: Not a double round for all classes, Superbike, Open Sportbike, 600 Sportbike.

The Parts Canada Superbike Series returns to Race City Motorsport Park, kicking off the Superbike Series Western trek for round #2 of this seven race series. Heading into Round #2 as the favourite to win is none other than the current Canadian Superbike Champion, Steve Crevier, on his Honda Canada, Factory RC 51. Steve Crevier was 2nd in both races last year racing an RC51 and he is in prime form following his dominating win in round #1 at Shannonville Motorsport Park, where he set the pole, and followed it up, by never relinquishing the lead in the race. The 5 time Canadian Superbike Champion from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, is defending his title with the skill that has made him the winningest superbike racer in Canadian History. Joining Steve Crevier on the Factory Honda Team will be none other than 2 time Canadian Champion, Mike Taylor, also on a Honda RC51. Both RC 51s dominated at this track last year, against the faster, more powerful inline four machinery of the Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. No Doubt Mike Taylor will be focused on improving his 4th place finish in round #1 after his 1st
appearance on a V-Twin.

Suzukis Canada's Francis Martin, riding the Fast Company GSXR 1000, will no doubt be in a feisty mood. The 1999 Canadian Superbike Champion, should be able to make the most of Calgary's long straight, with the new for 2001 high horsepower, GSXR 1000. Race City Speedway should suit this motorcycle well, and with Francis fully recovered from his qualifying crash prior to round #1, you can expect this French Canadian Rider, to challenge for the win. His 3rd place finish in Shannonville was a defensive effort holding off a determined Mike Taylor. Don't expect a defensive style at this high speed circuit.

Frank Trombino on the Yamaha Canada YZF1000R1 has a lot of work to do. A contender at last years event, Frank Trombino ground off the cases in 2000. Worked on the suspension for the 2nd race and was in contention for the lead when a spectacular crash involving Mike Taylor took out his motorcycle and his championship hopes. Fate has not been kind to Flying Frank, for in Round #1, mechanical failure forced his motorcycle to forego taking the checkered flag, and he pitted in the interest of both safety and frustration. With only 6 points to account for his qualifying position in round #1, Frank has no options but to go for the wins. The Yamaha YZF1000R1 is a well developed motorcycle. It is very fast, and very competitive with a talented racer with nothing to lose. Expect some fireworks as the Yamaha steals some of the hype away from the new kid on the block Suzuki. Also joining Frank on Superbike equipment will be Benoit Pilon.

Kawasaki Factory Superbike Racer, Owen Weichel, riding a very trick ZX7 is sitting in 2nd place in the series points. Anyone knowing his personality, will realize quickly, that 2nd sucks. And 2nd to Steve Crevier, is not a consideration. The Kawasaki ZX7 finished with 2 consecutive 4th place finishes at Race City in 2000 with Francis Martin as the rider. Expect Owen to better that performance, and challenge the V-Twins, and Big Bore Machines to the finish line.

Wild Cards: Local Ace Murray Clift is once again rumoured to be taking to the track. If someone provides him with a strong superbike, he can pull off an upset. Riders on Sportbike Machinery will be hard pressed to keep up with real superbikes on this very fast circuit.

YOSHIMURA CANADA PRO 600 SPORTBIKE - Last year saw a Honda CBR 600 sweep. This Year Honda has the new Fuel Injection, CBR 600FI on the racetrack, and it is winning again. However last year, Owen Weichel stole the win after a 3 way battle with Steve Crevier and Jordan Szoke. This year the defending race winner and current Yoshimura 600 Sportbike Champion is at Calgary on Kawasaki Equipment. Equipment he switched to with 3 races left in the 2000 series. Fully comfortable winning on any brand of 600, expect Weichel to prove that the Kawasaki is no slouch of a 600 on the fast tracks either. Weichel and Crevier battled it out once again in round one, and the "bring it on fat boy" feud which started at this track last year, certainly hasn't settled down any. Expect the usual 600 fireworks, but expect a little more pyrotechnics and paint exchanging from these two 600 specialists.

Expect local Race City expert, Clint McBain to put his GSXR 600 on the box. With help from Suzuki Canada, Clint had a very promising 1st round finish at round #1. He's on his home turf now, and he has much more saddle time.

INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE SUPERSHOW PRO OPEN SPORTBIKE - The big bikes are going to feast in Calgary, as the horsepower is unleashed on this very fast racetrack with nearly a mile long straight. Its anyone's game, but Frank Trombino seems to hold the upper hand on his Yamaha YZF1000R1. Victorious in round #1, and the current #1 plate holder sums up Franks handle on things in this 150 horsepower class. Expect challenges from Benoit Pilon, last years open Sportbike champion, also Yamaha R1 mounted, as well as from GSXR 1000 Fast Company Suzuki, mounted Francis Martin. Honda Factory Racers, Mike Taylor and Jeff Williams will expect a better effort from their team in order to compete at this high horsepower track. In round one the CBR929 equipment seemed to be too far down on power to be competitive with Front Runner Trombino.

Wild Cards? Again Murray Clift, if on the right machinery, will find his way to the top of the box. He is the King of Calgary, and while often considered retired, never seems to relinquish his throne when the National Series comes to town. Westerners Jeff Swainson and Brian Nielson, may also surprise the factory riders on their YZF1000R machinery.
