Canadian SuperBike 2001 - Round 2 - Calgary

After setting the pole in dry conditions, Owen Weichel put the Kawasaki ZX7RR on top of the box with a dominating performance in wet conditions.

Always strong in the rain, Weichel crossed the finish line with a comfortable 5 second lead. Weichel's win along with pole position points have thrust him to the top of the Superbike Championship with a 10 point advantage over defending champion Steve Crevier who finished just off the podium in fourth on his Honda RC51.

Jean Francois Cyr finished in 2nd place on his Yamaha R6 as the wet conditions nullified the strong advantage of the higher displacement machines at the very fast Calgary track. This is Cyr's 1st podium of the year in the SuperBike class.

Following Cyr across the finish line was fellow Quebec racer, Francis Martin. The 1999 Canadian Superbike Champion brought his Scott Miller Tuned, Suzuki Canada, GSXR1000 to the final spot on the podium for the 2nd time in two races.

Owen Weichel crashed in Saturday qualifying and wondered whether he had thrown away a chance at the title, in a series in which a costly crash can ruin all championship hopes. Weichel returned to the track Sunday, to see his motorcycle repaired, and then did his part.  He then overcame his injury to receive maximum points at a time in when things looked bleak for the
pole sitter.

This victory has put Kawasaki Canada to the front of the SuperBike standings. Expect the Honda/Kawasaki rivalry to continue as the series moves on to Edmonton Alberta for round #3.
