Formula Xtreme 2001 - Round 1 - Eastern Creek - Formula Xtreme - Race 1

Baird controlled the race from the front after taking the lead from pole-sitter Coxhell on the opening lap, before working his way to a small but comfortable lead over the field. Coxhell made up a considerable amount of ground in the closing laps to closely follow his team-mate across the finish line.  Damian Cudlin lunched an engine.

Robbie Baird: 1st - "That was definitely a good start for the year. I got a good start and was able to break away early This allowed me to be as smooth as possible which was important as the track was quite slippery due to the hot conditions.  Qualifying went well this morning. After being fastest in the opening session I tried a few different things with the bike for the second. Craig (Coxhell) slipped in a fresh tyre and knocked me off for pole, but I still had a front row grid position which was fine. I'm off the front row again tomorrow, so hopefully we can repeat the performances from today."

Craig Coxhell: 2nd -  "I got a good start, but after Robbie went past me I got caught up in a battle with Tony (Rees) for a few laps before I was able to break away and chase after Robbie. I was happy with my lap times, especially in the closing laps where I gained a lot of time. I don't think he knew I was as close as I was at the finish. Another lap and I felt I could have passed him. This is my first full season on the Yamaha R1 in Formula Xtreme and it was great to grab my first FX pole at the first event of the year. We changed the set up on the bike a fair bit between the qualifying sessions and the changes worked well."

Jamie Stauffer: 4th - "It's been a good start to the weekend for me. Both qualifying and the opening race went well and I am happy with the results I have got first time out on the bike. I was very nervous on the starting grid, but once the race got going I settled down and was able to settle into a good pace. I took it steady in the opening laps and was happy that I was able to pass a couple of riders and get up to fourth at the end. That's great as I will be off the front row of the grid for the first of tomorrow's races."

Dave `Radar' Cullen, Yamaha Team manager -  "It was a great start to the season for the whole team. All three riders rode well today in both the qualifying and the opening race. Robbie and Craig put on a great race today. Robbie started with a softer rear tyre which allowed him to get away early, but it was good to see Craig come back at him in the closing stages. Jamie did a good job as well in his first race for the team. I'm sure that he will be a regular at the front of the field once he gets a bit more time on the bike. All looks well for a good days racing tomorrow."
