2001 Grand Prix 500 - Round 1 - Combined Qualifying

Loris Capirossi (West Honda Pons NSR500) astounded the Suzuka paddock this afternoon when he out-paced his 500 rivals for the first pole position of 2001 by a massive 0.811 seconds.

Over the past few seasons GP racing has become accustomed to the entire 500 top ten being separated by less than a second, and pole position being decided by thousandths. However, Capirossi is unlikely to runaway with tomorrow's race, the first of this year's 16-event 500 World Championship. Suzuka, with its long straights and wide-open curves, allows ultra-close racing and race-long, five-man battles for the lead are the norm here.
