2001 Grand Prix 500 - Round 14 - Phillip Island - Saturday Free Practice

McCoy was at his tyre smoking best again this morning but he was unfortunately 7 tenths of a second slower than quickest man Rossi.

Valentino Rossi led most of the first 20 minutes of the session before being bettered by Alex Barros who was the first man to dip in to the 1 minute 33 second bracket this weekend with a 1m33.927s lap.

Sete Gibernau then picked his pace up to go 2nd quickest with 34 minutes remaining in the session with a 1m34.154s. 

Anthony West then surprised everyone by recording a 1m34.415s lap to place him 4th quickest before being overtaken by Biaggi moving in to 4th.  So halfway through the session Barros was quickest, Gibernau 2nd, Rossi 3rd, Biaggi 4th, West 5th.  McCoy was down in 14th.

Shortly into the final half hour of the session Biaggi moved up to 2nd quickest with a 1m33.882 and was followed in to the 33s by Valentino Rossi with a 1m33.979s. 

McCoy started improving his times with around 25 minutes to go when he recorded a 1m34.466s to place 8th.   Checa also got a move on to dip in to the 33s and relegate Rossi to 4th quickest.  Nakano also got quicker to move into 5th followed by McCoy improving a little to sit 6th quickest.

Rossi then went out on to the track with 10 minutes remaining and shot to the top of the timesheets with a 1m33.092s.
