2001 Grand Prix 500 - Round 3 - Final Qualifying/Combined

Valentino Rossi - "As we have seen in Jerez so many times before track conditions change drastically, not only day to day but hour to hour. In my opinion the track conditions this afternoon were no as good as yesterday. I took the risk of crashing today, and also many other riders I saw out there, 250 riders also. This is not unusual in Jerez. The crash of Carlos Checa was rally impressive and quite frightening. I'm of course satisfied with my pole position but I'm not sure about tyre performance in the race - we still have some doubts as we did not find tyres for the race distance in these conditions. I didn't use soft compound tyres to make my fastest lap times, but another type, but we know these will not be good enough for the race. The solution we must find in the morning warm-up. In South Africa, after taking pole, I was much more confident in the conditions, for everything. Again, as in South Africa, Loris (Capirossi) is second and looks to be my main rival. But I also think Nakano, Biaggi and Abe, might fight very hard tomorrow. They were running in low 1m 43s lap times today and I think that will be around the best lap time in the race. But I repeat, I think tyres will decide the race tomorrow and our work in the warm-up tomorrow will be very important."  Click here for image from Qualifying

Loris Capirossi - " I was disappointed because on the last lap on the last bend I got balked by Abe which spoilt my chance of catching Valentino and also getting into the one minute 42 seconds time. I feel much more confident than I did yesterday. We have overcome the problems we had with the front end yesterday. We had some rear end problems during the practice this morning but they were greatly improved this afternoon. Generally the bike is much better than yesterday and we are confident of getting a good result tomorrow." Click here for image from Qualifying

Max Biaggi - "My bikes are better today than they were yesterday. We’ve been looking to improve stability’ though I set my best time on the bike that was quicker but not quite so comfortable. We’ll be making a few changes overnight’ so warm-up will be important for us. We will also leave tyre choice until tomorrow morning’ though I’ve already decided to go with a 16.5 rear’ not a 17. Back in February I was quickest with the 17 but I did my best time today with the 16.5. I expect a fast race and I’ll be doing my best’ though I won’t make any predictions until after warm-up." Tohru Ukawa - "It was a very heavy crash in a very fast corner, but luckily I didn’t break anything. I only have bruises and banged my ankle again that I hurt in Japan. In the fast right-hander before the last left-hand hairpin leading to the start and finish straight, I lost the front and there was nothing I could do to avoid the crash. I still managed to improve my lap times and to take sixth position with my second bike, which I think is quite a good result under the circumstances. In South Africa, I started from the same position on the grid and ended up on the podium, so I’m determined to go for a good result in tomorrow’s race again. The team is working hard to get the crashed bike ready for tomorrow’s warm-up session, because it’s the one I prefer to ride with.”

Alex Barros - "We are still having problems but there is an improvement from yesterday. In particular I'm having rear end problems which will try and rectify during the warm-up tomorrow morning. However, there is only 20 minutes to make those changes and so even if we can't make the bike perfect I'm sure we can make improvements. I ripped a hole in the left knee of my leathers when I lost the front end of the bike and managed to keep the bike upright."

Jurgen Van Den Goorbergh - "It's an improvement, for sure. I wouldn't say were in completely the wrong direction yesterday, but we were too far off to get a good lap time with the same input from the rider. Today I didn't feel that I was riding faster myself, or trying harder - but the bike is getting better. We did a couple of things to the chassis - I don't want to say exactly what, but one was an alteration to the rear suspension link system, and that has helped the chatter problem. It means I can open the throttle earlier in the corners. Tyre wear also seems okay, so I can use a softer tyre for race distance. The engine is perfect, especially at the top end. We inevitably lose a little to the four-cylinder bikes in acceleration out of the corners, but at the top end we are as fast and sometimes even faster. That will help us at the other tracks too. I just missed the second row, but I'm not unhappy - my goal was the first three rows, and I am leading the third. I set my time on a front tyre that was quite old. The rear tyre was capable of a low 1:43, but I decided not to risk too much and push the front too hard."

Alex Crivillé - “I’m very disappointed, I certainly didn’t expect such a result after the free practice session today. We had some chatter this morning, and even though we took fourth place it was necessary to find a solution for our problems in order to improve further. Therefore we decided to change the suspension set-up and make it a bit softer, because the temperatures are cooler than last year. But we went the wrong way and we couldn’t improve the motorcycle. It’s a shame, because from the first day on we didn’t find the right set-up, and I never was able to do more than two laps in a row without returning to the pits for some changes. Now we have to line up on a position far back on the grid again, so everything will depend from a good start tomorrow.”

Carlos Checa - "It was a big highside but I can’t remember exactly what happened.  I fell heavily and I’ve hurt a shoulder and a foot’ in fact I hurt everywhere’ but the main thing is that I’ve not broken anything. It’s too soon to say whether I’ll race or not. We’ll analyse exactly what happened and see how I feel in the morning before we make any decisions." Click here for image from Qualifying

Anthony West - "I was up to 17th, but it's no good if you don't stay there. In some of the faster turns the trouble was rear grip. Where it's fast and you're getting on the gas the rear would spin up, and then it would just keep on spinning. If we choose the right tyre tomorrow and make some suspension changes to suit it the bike should be a lot better in those turns. Last time out at Welkom (South Africa) it was a new bike to me, a new team, and I hadn't ridden since Phillip Island (Australian Grand Prix) last year. So I'm trying to get into a rhythm, but then just as I get into the groove I'm at a different track and the bike behaves differently. I need a bit more time, but the team's working really hard and we're getting right into it. We just need a bit more but it'll come." Click here for image from Qualifying
