Races for Historic Machines - Solos and Sidecars and Buckets

  • Period 2: Pre-1946 Pre-war machines
  • Period 3: 1946-1963 Classic solos and sidecars
  • Period 4: 1963-1972 Post Classic solos and sidecars
  • Period 5: 1973-1980 Forgotten Era solos
  • Buckets - 100cc 2 Stroke and 150cc 4 stroke machines

This weekend Motorcycling Victoria's Broadford track will echo to the sounds of low rolling thunder, shrieking two strokes and snarling four cylinders when the annual Victorian Historic Championships are conducted.

Bikes from other eras will take to the track again. Victorian and interstate riders will compete, some merely to re-experience the sounds and sensations of big single- and twin-cylinder machines from the halcyon years of British and European engineering and the first machines from the land of the Rising Sun.

Machines being raced include those from the pre-war era with no rear suspension and external oil pumps and mechanicals.

The Classic Era from 50's-60's includes large-capacity singles and twins from England like Vincent, Norton, Triumph, AJS and Matchless ruled the roads. In the sixties they were joined by European makes with small single cylinder two-strokes and the jewel like Benellis and Ducatis. From the mid sixties the Japanese introduced machines of increasingly high performance which gradually overhauled and bypassed the British marques which had been state-of-the-art.

The solo machines racing at the meeting are classified as Period 2 for Pre-war machines, Period 3 (Classic) up to December 1962, Period 4 (Post Classic) from 1963-1972, and Period 5 (Forgotten Era) from 1973-1980. Sidecars from the Classic and Post Classic eras will also be competing.

Whichever era spectators are interested in, they are likely to see some of the best examples still being raced which are not only racing machines but also rolling museum pieces, many in better than new condition.

An added feature this year is the inclusion of the Bucket Nationals.  These titles are run annually at different tracks around Australia, this is the first time in Victoria. Buckets, also known as Superlights are a cost effective class. Machines are based on road going commuter motorcycles of lowly specification and performance either 100cc 2 Stroke or 150cc 4 Stroke. This makes them a low cost and easily accessible class while still providing excitement and close racing both for the more skilled and enthusiast riders.

Parking in the comfort of your car is available around the accessible spectator areas. Access to the pits is free. The track is 80 km north of Melbourne. At the Broadford turnoff, turn right over the freeway along Strath Creek Rd and the track is on the right, 1.5 kms from the freeway towards Strath Creek.

Practice commences 9.00am Saturday & Sunday Racing from 11.00am Saturday & 10.30am Sunday

Admission is free on Saturday. The Historic Championship Events will be conducted on Sunday, the Bucket Titles are decided on point score over the weekend.
