A hot lap of Phillip Island with Damian Cudlin

Damian Cudlin takes you for a ride around the magnificent Phillip Island circuitThe Formula Xtreme Tri-State Series moves to Phillip Island this weekend for the 4th round.  Here young hotshot Damian Cudlin takes you for a lap around what is undoubtedly one of the best motorcycle racing circuits in the world.

"The lap starts on Gardner Straight as you go under the bridge and fly over the crest of the hill.

"You're really moving at this part of the circuit and it can get a bit hairy at times because the wind is so strong here. The first time I sat up for turn one, the wind nearly took my head off! Turn one is pretty fast, and the fast corners are generally the most important to get a good lap time.

"Turn two can be a tricky corner to get right because it's a double apex corner. The exit of this turn is crucial and it took me a few laps to get it right, because you have to get on the throttle really early, even before you can see the exit. The bike gets pretty sideways sometimes out of here, which gives me a bit of a buzz.

"As you peel into Turn three, you can really feel the wind again. It's 5th gear now, and I 'try' to hold the throttle on all the way through so it doesn't unsettle the bike too much. I say 'TRY' because it doesn't happen all the time! You straighten the bike up and get hard on the anchors for Turn four. This is a really good place to pass, but you gotta watch it on the first lap because there's usually carnage!

"Turn four is really slow and it's easy to overcook it. You've got to be smooth on the throttle coming out of here otherwise it'll bite you. I short shift it to third gear then peel into Siberia.

"It's important to keep good corner speed and still get good drive out of here. Siberia is banked a bit so that helps to run it through pretty fast. As I come out of Siberia I shift to 4th, then 5th and hold it tight through Turn seven, so I can get a good run through the Hayshed.

"The Hayshed ( Turn eight ) is pretty fast and you've really got to wrestle the bike through there. It's a bit bumpy coming out, but I try to get on the throttle hard and point it towards Turn nine. I downshift to 4th then hold it tight over Lukey Heights.

"This corner's pretty cool because you can't see anything as you're going through it, then as you come over the top the bike gets really light and often goes sideways- that's a really good feeling.....when you make it!

"You get hard on the brakes again for MG and downshift to 2nd gear. This is also a good place to pass, especially on the last lap. As you drive out of MG you shift to 3rd gear for Turn 11.

"These last two corners are important because you can win or lose a race here. You've got to drive hard out 11, shift to fourth, then line yourself up for the all important final turn.

"This turn is my favourite because it's really fast and you can have some really big power slides as you come onto the straight. If you come out of there really fast then it helps your top speed along the straight, which can make a big difference to your lap time."

....Get down to Phillip Island this weekend to see Cudlin and the rest of the Xtreme boys in action.
