2001 AGV Stars of Tomorrow, November 10/11

This year's Stars of Tomorrow is set to be one of the best ever, with 200 C- and D-Grade solo and B-Grade Sidecar entrants set to contest one of the leading talent indicator events in Australia.

Many of Australia's leading riders today rode at Stars of Tomorrow when they were up and comers. This year for the first time the winners of the seven 'Stars' finals will receive AGV helmets as prizes.

The major supporting sponsors are Aral Lubricants and Quest Apartments at Phillip Island. Class sponsors include Fairbairn Cranes and Planet Discs (125 Grand Prix), AMCN (250 Production), Awesome Discs (250 Grand Prix), Phillip Island Motorsport (Supersport), Australian Superbike School (Superbikes) and Bob Martin Engineering (Sidecar Stars).

In addition this year, the 3rd and final round of the Lazer Helmets Australian Sidecar Championship has been included as an added incentive, with Australia's leading 3-wheeled exponents to provide thrilling racing at the high-speed Phillip Island circuit.

The concept of Stars is simple: racing is restricted to C&D grade competitors. Without the presence of the established A-grade stars, competitors have the chance to demonstrate against their peers their ability and skill. Success at Stars is not a guarantee of success, but can be an indicator for team managers and entrants as to where their future rider choices might lie.

Troy Corser failed to finish the 1988 Stars of Tomorrow Final, but crashed after setting the fastest lap while closing on the leaders. It was partly this ride which earned him the attention of Australia's Distributor-backed teams, ultimately leading to Australian, US and World Superbike Championships.

Anthony and Alex Gobert are other established riders associated with Stars of Tomorrow, winning in 1992 and 1999, respectively. Next year, both will be riding in the USA in the Supersport, Superbike and Unlimited classes in the AMA Championship.

Other riders to have competed in Stars over the years include Kirk McCarthy and Garry McCoy - this is a chance to see the Stars on their way up !
