World SuperBike 2001 - Round 11 - Oschersleben - Race 1 report
By, Trevor Hedge

Hodgson starts from pole but Edwards got the flyer from Yanagawa, Corser and Laconi.  Some riders down including Craggill.

Edwards trying to do the escape act while Yanagawa looks to be slowing Corser and Xaus who is riding aggressively and took Corser for 3rd on lap 3.  A lap later Xaus got through on Yanagawa on the way into the chicane.  Bayliss in 5th and closing on Corser and Yanagawa.

Xaus is 2.5 seconds behind Edwards.  Steve Martin 12th, Goddard 20th.

Corser alongside Yanagawa at the entry to turn 7 and squeezes past him.  Bayliss underneath a couple of corners later.   Edwards way out in front and running under the lap record.  Xaus in 2nd with around a second over Corser and Bayliss who have been held up by Yanagawa.  Half a lap later Bayliss slotted under Corser for 3rd.

20 laps to run - Edwards, Xaus, Bayliss, Corser, Yanagawa, Laconi, Bostrom, Okada, Hodgson, Chili, Toseland, Martin, Lavilla, Chambon, Borja, Stey, Bussei, Borciani, Sanchini, Goddard.  Edwards running away out in front under lap record pace and has 5 seconds over Bayliss who holds down 3rd.

Bostrom through on Laconi for 6th.

A few laps later Corser, Yanagawa and Bostrom went 3 wide into a turn but Bostrom came out in front from Yanagawa and Corser who lost 2 places in one corner.

Bostrom has upped the pace now and is gaining on Bayliss a little but has a long way to go.  Xaus has actually pulled back a few tenths on race leader Edwards and is now only 2 seconds behind.  Bayliss is a further 7 seconds behind in 3rd with Bostrom only two seconds behind in 4th.

Okada challenging Corser for 6th.  Chili through on Laconi for 8th.  Pole sitter Hodgson is still running down in 10th.

Bayliss out of the race, his Ducati has cried enough by the look of it, he looks to be just idling around and has lost a dozen places in a matter of seconds with 10 laps to go.  This is going to make a big difference to the championship if Edwards holds on for the win which looks nearly assured.

Xaus catching Edwards now with only 1.6 seconds the difference with 9 laps to run.  Hodgson under Corser for 8th.

20 laps down - Edwards, Xaus, Bostrom, Yanagawa. Okada, Chili, Laconi, Hodgson, Corser, Toseland, Lavilla, Martin is the top 12.

Bayliss running at a snail pace now and turns around on the straight to punch his fist into the air as Xaus sailed past to chase down Edwards.  Obviously it would be of great benefit to Bayliss if Xaus can take the win from Edwards, those 5 points could be the difference being world champion or not.

5 laps to run and Edwards has picked up the pace a little again to be just on 1.5 seconds ahead of Xaus but the Spaniard is definitely not giving up the chase.

Goddard up to 16th and closing in on a points finish.

It looks as thought Edwards has the show under control now as Xaus is dropping back a little further now.  Edwards takes the win.
