World SuperBike 2001 - Round 12 - Assen - Quotes

Troy Bayliss - "I just can’t believe it. I didn’t realize I was champion until the slowdown lap when I saw all the guys of the team with the T-shirt. I’d like to thank the Ducati Infostrada team, all our sponsors and suppliers and all the engineers in Ducati including one of the guys behind the Testastretta engine Filippo Preziosi, for making today’s win possible. You don’t do it all on your own and there have been a lot of people who have helped me all along. It’s a lot to take in because last weekend wasn’t great, I didn’t expect it at all, but that’s racing. I’m smiling all the way through now and looking forward to going to Imola and have a decent race with all the pressure off!"

Ruben Xaus - "Troy was battling for the world championship, but I’m here again on the podium again today. It’s hard to get in front on this track and he was leading right from the start so you make some mistakes even if you don’t want to. I was pushing him hard because you never know what will happen, maybe it rains, maybe they come behind you, it’s really easy to make a mistake so I just wanted to be sure that Troy was first and me second and that’s it. I’m happy for him and the world championship and for Ducati it’s fantastic."

Troy Corser - "I think maybe I might've been a bit too cautious in the first race, I thought the tyre was spinning a bit too much and I eased the pace to see what was going to happen. But after a couple of laps, the problem didn't get worse, so I got on it again. But by that time the rest were too far away and I had to charge round without any hope of a podium. In race two, it might have been better to have a slightly different gearbox, but I made a reasonable start and was in third place after three laps. Frankie (Chili) and I had a bit of a good scrap. The racing was real close, but you always get close racing at Assen, but not dangerous. At one point, I made a mistake on the back part of the circuit and came right out of the seat and Frankie got past, but I managed t do him again three laps from the end and after that I made sure he didn't get past. Today, I didn't have any major tyre problems and it was good to have a race day unaffected by vibrations or out of round tyres. It's been a bit of a difficult time recently, so it's good to have a race day without any major dramas and just race. If Imola is the same, I think another podium or two is a real possibility."

Colin Edwards - Race 1 - "I did what I could in the early stages to make sure I stayed in touch with the lead but in the end I think Troy (Bayliss), Ruben (Xaus) and myself were all sliding around as much as each other. The conditions were tricky and we've had hardly any dry track time so I had to settle into a groove and hope I could challenge in the latter stages of the race. Who knows what would have happened with Ruben and Troy towards the end of the race?" - Race 2 - "It's our own fault, the only thing I lacked with the front tyre in the first race was a little stability at the end of the back straight. We went for another front which we knew wouldn't turn quite as well but would be more stable. It was a bad choice and cost me any chance of a win and of the title. We used the same tyre yesterday but I never experienced anything like the feel I had in that second race today. The championship's gone now but we've still got two more races to look forward to at Imola and I'll be going all out for two wins. Troy (Bayliss) deserves the title, he's ridden hard all year and been consistent."

Tady Okada - Race 1 - "The conditions were always going to be difficult because of the lack of set-up time in the dry and tyre choice was a gamble. I was sliding around almost from the start of the race then the front developed a chatter problem after about six laps." - Race 2 - "The machine actually felt better than the first race but the result was a lot worse. I could probably have finished 10th but I had to help Colin (Edwards). In the end it didn't matter for him but it was no problem for me."

Pierfrancesco Chili - "It's been not such a bad day - considering the conditions we've had this weekend. I'm satisfied that I have ridden as hard as I could today. Before the races I believed that I was going to get a podium for sure. My best chance was in the second race when I had a big fight with Troy (Corser). Right at the end, he got past me and then blocked me as I tried to get past him. I tried three times on the last lap, but each time he closed the door and I had to brake to avoid hitting him and taking both of us down. In the first race, the rear tyre faded about halfway through and I couldn't push harder than I did. The wind was very strong today and I had to be careful not to lose the bike sometimes."

Stephane Chambon - "It's been a strange weekend and it's been hard - with all the changes of conditions. Today I also found the wind a problem and in the second race I used a heavier front axle and that helped a bit. I made an OK start in the first race, but the bike felt hard to turn and I don't think I got completely comfortable, so couldn't go any faster without a problem. In race two, with the heavier front axle, the bike felt a bit better and I had a really good fight with Edwards, Bostrom, Okada and Lavilla. All in all, I suppose I'm happy, but not happy."

Ben Bostrom - "I really had two races to forget today, it was miserable. When the bike tires you out in two laps you’re in trouble. We made the wrong choice of tyre in race 1, but in the second race the bike wasn’t handling very well at all. I think we needed just more dry time. Usually my bike starts out pretty good so I was surprised to see us left behind today. Anyway at Imola, I’ll be back to my usual self and going for victory."

Peter Goddard - “It's been a tough weekend, with the weather changing all the time, and this was our first time at Assen with the Benelli. Once again the reliability was good, but I would have liked to have scored some points. We were in a points-scoring position, either 14th or 15th, in the first half of both races, but then we struggled with grip and I dropped some places. We didn't have much dry-weather track time in practice and qualifying, and the rear suspension set-up was too tough on the tyres. In the races the conditions were actually the best they'd been all week. They stopped the first race as soon as it started spitting. In the second race the rain held off until the 'slow-down' lap, which was good. I'm pleased for Troy (Bayliss) that he's won the championship. He's always been a good rider with a lot of determination. This again shows the depth of talent in Australian motorcycling – we've had so many different riders winning races and
various international championships around the world in the last 10 to 15 years."
