World SuperBike 2001 - Round 13 - Imola - Race 2

Go back and read about race 1...

Bayliss not starting this race due to the injuries he sustained in race 1, Laconi is very lucky to make the grid as the crash between him and Bayliss was particularly nasty.

Laconi got the jump from Edwards and Bostrom, Xaus 4th.  Steve Martin 12th, Broc Parkes 13th, Goddard 17th, Craggill 18th.

Xaus through on Bostrom for 3rd a lap later, Laconi still held the lead from Edwards but the Texan is right on his tail.  Antonello 5th, Corser 6th.

Lap 4 of 21 - Race order -Laconi, Edwards, Xaus, Bostrom, Antonello, Corser, Okada, Chili, Hodgson, Lavilla, Chambon, Martin, Parkes, Bussei, Gramigni, Goddard, Craggill, Sanchini, Pedercini, Stey, Borciani, Blora, Foti, Ulm, Pasini, Mrkyvka.

Corser through on Antonello for 5th a couple of laps later.  Laconi still out in front and looks to have the measure of Edwards by the tiniest of fractions, Xaus right on Edwards and may throw a cat among the pigeons.  A lap later Corser set a new lap record to close up on the back of the 4th placed Bostrom.

Xaus through on Edwards, then on Laconi, Xaus in the lead.  Corser through on Bostrom for 4th a lap later.  A little later Corser started to challenge Edwards but he lost it in a big way and Corser went down very hard indeed.  Edwards ran off the circuit but limped back to the pits under the Honda's own steam.  Corser looks a little hurt and may have damaged something in his lower arm.

Steve Martin up to 6th, Parkes 9th, Goddard 12th, Craggill 15th.   Xaus out in front from Laconi, Okada closing on them slowly from 3rd.  Bostrom 4th.

Laconi through on Xaus for the lead and looking comfortable.  The Aprilia seems to have a straight line speed advantage over the Ducati.  Okada still 3rd.

Lap 17 of 21 - Laconi, Xaus, Okada, Bostrom, Antonello, Martin, Lavilla, Chili, Parkes, Hodgson is the top ten.  Goddard 14th, Craggill 15th.

Two laps to run and Okada right on the back of Xaus now, Laconi still in front.  Last lap and Laconi, Xaus and Okada running nearly nose to tail and Laconi holds on for the win.
