Bayliss fell early in the SuperPole session but rushed back to the pits to get on his 'B' bike and had made it back up to 5th quickest with 28 minutes left of the 50 minute session. Xaus was really sliding the Infostrada Ducati round at Phillip Island today but held it all together to end the session with the 11th best time. "Yesterday and today we had a few problems and I was unable to lap as much as I would have liked. They weren't serious problems, but that and the windy conditions meant that I couldn't get a good run today. In the wet I felt really good however, we'll just have to wait and see what the weather is like for tomorrow's races". said the man who was jokingly referred to in the paddock as a 'Californian Spaniard', due to his casual and very cool demeanour. Corser's Aprilia recorded a speed of 310 on the main straight, this may be more a factor of the Aprilia's superior aerodynamics rather than sheer horsepower. Neil Hodgson pulled a huge surprise out of the bag with 23 minutes left in the session by recording a 1m33.740s lap to displace Corser from the top spot. “The wind was a big problem during my 12 SuperPole laps. Even though I felt relaxed and confident of obtaining a good time,” said the 27-year-old Hodgson. “I must admit the team’s strategy for SuperPole worked wonders! “I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s two races and I don’t care whether it’s wet or dry,” said the current British Superbike Champion. “Second on the grid is a good way to start the weekend and I’m extremely pleased to share it with team and sponsors that are here supporting me this weekend.” Corser went back out and went under Hodgson's time with a 1m33.576s lap recorded on the last of his maximum allowed 12 laps. "The Aprilia is working really well and it's also been OK in the wet. We can probably make a little improvement, but it's a bit difficult to tell because of the strong winds today. The conditions were pretty difficult because the wind kept changing direction. The headwind didn't affect us too much, but it was a bit of a battle to keep the bike on line in the crosswinds. I reckon that to do 1:33.5 today in poor conditions was pretty damn good really and if the conditions had been perfect I think it would've been possible to do 1:32s. We've got good set-ups for all the conditions, but we'll make our tyre choices once we see what the weather does in the morning. I'm not worried about the weather, because we've got the bike to win - whatever." Bostrom also used the last part of the session to good effect and promoted himself to 4th spot on the timesheets with 15 minutes to run. "I'm really happy to be on the front row", said the delighted Californian, "because I was sweating pretty badly after my earlier results. A big thanks to the team because they did a great job. It's going to be really exciting tomorrow". Bayliss was out trying hard but his 'B' Ducati did not look as though it was behaving as he would like and consequently he ended up on the 2nd row in 5th spot. "It's been going really well up to today and it was going well at the start of SuperPole but I hit a damp patch coming up to the Hayshed. Then I had a few problems getting the tyres warm and so today it didn't happen. It'll be OK tomorrow though because I'm sure I'll be able to get off the line well from row 2 ". Laconi ended SuperPole in 6th - "I had less difficulties in the afternoon," said Regis Laconi. " The wind seems blowing not so strongly compare this morning". Of course going into some turns it was like to have a parachute behind the back. I got the second line but this is a well-known track and there are many good points where to pass. I will try to gain some position more ahead the other guys, but in case of rain this strategy could be not possible. The bike is... fantastic, we can hope on a incredible engine."
