World SuperBike 2001 - Round 4 - Quotes
|
Makoto Tamada - Race 1 - "I'm not a very good starter but I managed to be fourth away, my plan was to get to the front, once I was there I just watched my pit board so I didn't have to push that hard." Race 2 - "I wanted to stay behind Izutsu and enjoy riding with him, I knew I could pass him any time so I decided to wait until there were 10 laps to go. I wanted to win to win that second race, easily or desperately." Tamaki Serizawa - Race 1 - “I lost my gear shift pedal half way round the track and unfortunately the Kawasaki is not an automatic, so I couldn’t continue”. Race 2 - “I had a good battle with Tamada early in the race and thought that I could beat him to the line. I tried very hard to make a good race of it and I am very happy to be on the podium. After the first race, I knew I could keep up with the top riders and this gave me confidence to push harder.” Hitoyasu Izutsu - “I love this course, this morning Troy and Tamada showed how fast their bikes were, so I tried to get a good lead early on in the race. A fallen rider forced me to slow a little and the gap closed. Tamada caught me with ten laps to go and when he passed I couldn’t keep up.” Troy Corser - "I made a good start in the first race and was happy in the lead, until a little mistake (when I missed a gear) allowed Tamada through and into the lead. I tried to catch him, but decided to conserve my rear tyre before pushing hard in the second part of the race. In the end, I could see I wasn't going to catch Tamada, so I decided to settle for second rather than risk anything. Almost from the start of race two I felt a little problem at the rear end and I thought it was probably a tyre out of round. There was a lot of vibration, especially on the right side, but I really wanted to finish the race. I raced as hard as I could without crashing and although sixth is not what I wanted, it's definitely better then a DNF. I'm looking forward to returning to Europe and the next race at Monza." Shinichi Ito - Race 1 - "After the first corner incident I just concentrated on fighting back and I'm happy with fourth." Race 2 - "I hit the rear brake too hard and went off the track. I'm very disappointed with ninth." Gregorio Lavilla - Race 1 - “I was passing riders all the time, but at the end I think I chose a too soft tyre, because I couldn’t push any harder to catch the leading riders. But that is racing - maybe we will use a slightly harder tyre in race two." Race 2 - “I really thought I could get on the podium in race two, but I got a really bad start and had to make up a lot of time. In the last couple of laps, I ran wide through turn one and had to stand the bike up and run off the track. I couldn’t slow down enough before the tyre barrier and just hit it at very low speed and dropped the bike. If I could have got the bike back on the track in time I would have probably scored a point or two – I was a little unlucky today.” Colin Edwards - "After warm-up this morning everything was perfect. I don't have a clue what happened between then and the first race.
It's baffling. We made a lot of changes for the second race but I knew straight away it wasn't going to be much better so I started pushing the front hard in the early stages. It's been a tough round for us but by tomorrow morning we'll be able to analyse everything and we'll be in good shape for
Monza. Getting any response from the rear of the machine was impossible. If I tried to turn into a corner the rear would come around, if I tried to get the power on the rear came
around." Akira Yanagawa - Race 1 - “I lost the front on the way out of the corner and got onto the gas a little bit too early and that was it – I was on the ground." Race 2 - “I was really, really sick out there (Akira hit his head hard when he crashed in race 1) and just tried to get as many points as I could. Any points are better than none.” Ben Bostrom - “The weekend started off badly for me but all things considered, ended up pretty good, the team did a great job, and the changes we made to the rear and the front forks did the trick in race 2. I was so worried about Corser throughout the race but I managed to keep him behind me right until the end.” Neil Hodgson - Race 1 - “The bike is working great, we have a really good race set-up and the Dunlop tyres are working perfectly. I was able to maintain consistent lap times throughout the race and was close to taking sixth position. I feel confident about race two. I just need to get a good start and keep pushing my limit. I also need to make sure I stay out of trouble with the Japanese wild cards... I’m here for points." Race 2 - “I’m absolutely delighted with my results. It has been a great weekend, we had a really good race set-up and the GSE Ducati was fantastic to ride. I had no problem with traction, but overall I think it was the right day to be on Dunlop tyres. This weekend I’ve been feeling really good about racing and I’m confident that there are more results like this to come. If you remove the Japanese wild cards from today’s results, I would have finished on the podium in both races. Hopefully I can secure a podium finish when the championship returns to Europe.” Pierfrancesco Chili - "In the first race, I had a good start, but another rider ran up my inside and I had to lift my Suzuki up to avoid hitting him. I knew the race was long, so I settled into consistent lap times and tried to finish as high up as possible. In the second race, I pushed very hard from the beginning, then my rear tyre lost some grip. I still pushed hard and I am pleased to have scored some good points in both races. I am happy with the bike's performance today and I can't wait until the next round at my home circuit in Monza."
Tadayuki Okada - "I'm happy to get some points after only finishing 20th in the first race. I'm disappointed for Colin for the whole weekend. Colin is closer to the head of the championship than me and it's not been a good day for him. We made some changes to the machine for the second race and tried a different profile rear tyre. That improved the front end feeling of the machine but I wasn't happy riding around in 12th place. I'm just hoping I can get a lot better results when we get to Europe, right now I'm looking forward to
that."
James Toseland - Race 1 - “I’m having a fantastic time, the team has found a good set-up for the GSE Ducati and I feel confident enough to push the bike that little bit further. I’ve been able to score points so far today and I need to do it again. There’s one more opportunity today to improve my position in the championship tally.” Race 2 - “I have learnt so much this weekend, I’ve had the chance to dice with Colin Edwards and Troy Bayliss. It’s been fantastic. I just can’t get the smile off my face!” |
