2001 - Round 4 - Race 1 report
By, Trevor Hedge
| The wildcards dominated
qualifying at Sugo but the biggest surprise was both Troy Bayliss and
Ruben Xaus not even making the SuperPole cut-off, they will start from
the 5th row of the grid.
Bostrom and Corser off the line well but Corser forces his way underneath and leads them out of turn 1. Corser, Bostrom then 3 Kawasakis before Tamada. Yanagawa in the dirt so now only 2 Kawasakis in front of Tamada. Izutsu challenging Bostrom for 2nd, Corser may do an escape act here. Bayliss up to 15th, Parkes 17th, Craggill 22nd, Martin 24th. Tamada up to 4th, Izutsu under Bostrom. Corser, Izutsu, Bostrom, Tamada. Tamada under Bostrom a few corners later and is the fastest man on the circuit at present. Aprilia, Kawasaki, Honda, Ducati is the race order. Lap 3 - Corser, Izutsu, Tamada, Bostrom, Ryo, Serizawa, Edwards. Bayliss back to 16th, Parkes 17th, Craggill 22nd, Martin 24th. Tamada through on Izutsu for 2nd and out after Corser who has around half a second on the Japanese Honda rider on this 4th lap but somehow I don't think it will take too long for the wildcard to be on Corser's case. Bostrom back to 6th with Edwards right behind him. The leading trio now have a good gap over Ryo in 4th place. Tamada into the lead and I don't think Corser will have anything to fight back with but you never know..... Izutsu is right with them also and if anyone makes the smallest of mistakes they will lose their position. Tamada is pulling out a good gap now over his pursuers, Izutsu is trying hard to get by Corser but the power of the Aprilia may just be enough to hold the Kawasaki mounted Izutsu out. Ryo is in 4th place but some 4 seconds behind the leading trio. Bayliss still in 16th, Parkes 19th, Martin 22, Craggill 24th. Corser in the very low 1m30s but Tamada is consistently running 29s. Ito has gone from 15th to 7th and on a charge. Bostrom now back to 8th, Edwards 10th, Bayliss up to 15th. Bussei into the dirt. Lap 9 of 25 and Tamada now has 2 seconds on Corser and Izutsu. Serizawa has gone past Ryo for 4th and Ryo is 6th. Ryo under Serizawa in a maximum aggression move and into 4th, this battle for 4th is great but it is happening some 11 seconds behind race leader Tamada and 7 seconds behind the 2nd placed battle between Corser and Izutsu. Ito through on Serizawa in an elbows out move for 5th. Ito and Ryo nearly banging fairings into the corners. Okada off but remounts to join the race. Corser still managing to hold out Izutsu. Serizawa retires with machine problems., great news for the regular championship runners who gain an extra place and one or two more championship points with it if they keep their position. Izutsu is being quite restrained and seems relatively content to sit behind Corser for now, Tamada has escaped and their is no chance of catching the race leader so maybe he is waiting until the final laps to put his move on Corser for 2nd. He is close enough to have made a rash or block move many times already but has not tried to force the issue.......yet. 10 laps to run - Tamada, Corser, Izutsu, Ito, Ryo, Lavilla, Hodgson, Chili, Bostrom, Yoshikawa, Edwards, Toseland, Bayliss, Laconi, Chambon. Corser has opened up a few tenths on Izutsu now. Corser and Lavilla will both take the biggest benefit in the championship points if they finish this race in their 2nd and 6th positions respectively. Corser will leapfrog Bayliss in the points to take the championship lead and with it a nice points gap. Lavilla may well move into 4th spot in the championship. But there is a long way to go yet. Tamada has 5 seconds over Corser who in turn has pulled a second over Izutsu. Hodgson now really challenging Lavilla for his 6th position but Lavilla is much better through the chicane before the main straight so if it comes down to the last lap the Spaniard may well have the upper hand. Corser has now opened up a safe gap over Izutsu and has even closed up a second on Tamada, the gap now 4 seconds. 3 laps to run - Tamada, Corser, Izutsu, Ito, Ryo. Hodgson slides underneath Lavilla but does he have the speed to keep his spot, into the chicane and the Englishman does it better that time. Chili is now right with Lavilla and Hodgson also. Final lap - Only one thing changed in the order and that was Lavilla got back through on Hodgson.
