World SuperBike 2001 - Round 5 - Monza - Race 2

Go back and read about race 1...

Set for another ding-dong battle between Edwards & Bayliss?  Or will we have more players this time?

Ben Bostrom will not be one of the players however as he injured himself in race 1 and the injury is too bad for him to safely complete race 2.

Bayliss got the jump but Edwards takes the inside line into the chicane, Corser had a terrible start and is mid-pack.  Chili up in to 3rd, Antonello 4th.  End of lap 1 and Antonello through on Chili for 3rd while Edwards is opening a couple of tenths over Bayliss.

Okada is in 5th and was the fastest man on the circuit on lap 2.  The Japanese rider took Chili for 4th on lap 3.  Bayliss is really squirming around under brakes in this early part of the race.  Antonello still in 3rd but Okada is the man on a charge from 4th, hold that he just took Antonello for 3rd and the Aprilia test rider is leaving a trail of smoke, an engine probably has decided to call it a day.

Bayliss through on Edwards but the Texan comes straight back at him.  A lap later the Australian goes through into the lead again in the chicane.  Bayliss, Edwards, Okada, Chili then a gap back to Xaus, Yanagawa and Corser in 7th.  Steve Martin in 15th.

7 tenths cover the top 3.  Craggill 19th and Martin must have a mistake which has pushed him back to 20th.  Lavilla in the dirt.

Lap 7 of 18 and now only half a second covers the top 3.  Edwards hits the front, I am sure Okada will also try it within the next couple of corners.

Chili has upped the pace again to join right on the back of Okada again, the leading quartet are running nose-to-tail.   Bayliss back in to the lead with 10 laps to run.  Edwards takes it back the next time into the chicane.  Bayliss through again a couple of corners later.

Edwards is much better under brakes today than Bayliss whose Ducati looks very untidy under brakes, not a nice back it in type untidy but a nasty sway from side-to-side.

Corser retires - no points from Monza for the Aprilia rider who before this round had a healthy championship lead.

Bayliss has now opened up a couple of tenths over Colin who in turn has broken away from Okada with 6 to run.  Martin back up to 15th.  Edwards right with Bayliss once again, turned around on the bike and pulled a tear-off and seemed to let Edwards back through for the lead but then went back through again a few corners later, puzzling.....

Edwards seems quicker through the first half of the circuit but Bayliss much quicker through the second half of each lap.  4 laps to run and Bayliss remains in front.  Okada and Chili are battling for 3rd but quite a distance back from the leading duo.  Yanagawa also coming to join the battle for 3rd.

Yanagawa through on Chili for 4th with 2 laps to run, half a lap later he also took Okada to promote himself to third.

Bayliss has cleared out nearly a second over Edwards and unless something untowards happens the man from Taree will take the win.  There it is.
