World SuperBike 2001 - Round 5 - SuperPole & Grid

Troy Bayliss - "The only difficult session for me this weekend was Friday when it was raining, Sugo wasn’t great, but Ducati worked hard for two days after Japan and you can see the results here at Monza. The bike ’s great, the team’s working hard and I can’t seem to do anything wrong. Riding a factory Ducati at Monza makes me really happy, I love the place, there’s a great atmosphere and I want to win tomorrow”.

Neil Hodgson - “I’m really pleased with a front row start, we’ve had a succession of small problems today which have been holding us back and we’ve really had to rely on the expertise of Stewart Johnstone (GSE Racing’s race engine builder and suspension technician) to get the right set-up for the bikes and ultimately achieve the fastest lap. Superpole was difficult because I had qualified eleventh up to that point. It was hard to gauge how much I needed to push myself and the bike. I felt really comfortable on the Superpole lap and just focused on putting the perfect lap together. Tomorrow’s the real challenge though. I’ve got two chances to grab some points and keep climbing the championship ladder. I just want a good set of points before I head back to the UK for my home round at Donington.”

Ben Bostrom - “In Superpole the bike was good but the rider wasn’t. But on the whole we’re near race set-up. We’ve found the race tyres and I’m sure we’re going to be OK for tomorrow”.

Edwards - "I'm just not aggressive enough through the final, Ascari chicane, that's where I crashed yesterday and I'm really struggling to get through there and on to the finish line as fast as I would like."

Troy Corser - "After the afternoon un-timed session, when I did a really quick lap, I was hopeful of a really good time in Superpole. But I ran a bit wide at the first chicane and lost some time. After that I realised that I wasn't going to get Superpole, so I concentrated on completing the quickest lap I could without taking any risks. Superpole is important, but what happens in the two races tomorrow is much more important and that's what I'm focusing on. The second row is not so bad as the first turn is quite a long way away. As long as I can make a good start, I'll be in the top three by the time we approach the first turn and that'll be OK. I'm pretty happy with my RSV Aprilia and I think we can get a couple of good results tomorrow and that's what I'm after. I want to leave Monza still leading the championship by as many points as possible."

Ruben Xaus - “I need to learn how to do Superpole because it’s quite difficult, the weekend has gone pretty well so far because after Sugo I lost a lot of confidence even though I knew it wasn’t my fault. I like to do well and win always. Now we are in Europe I think I can do some good races. I’m happy with my Ducati bike, without it I wouldn’t be here!”.
