World SuperBike 2001 - Round 5 - Monza - Quotes

Bayliss - “I felt really confident all weekend, I’d always said that I was waiting for a win and I had the chance to get two today. Congratulations to Colin, he rode a couple of really great races. This was my first double win since my British Superbike days. I was a bit worried about my tyre in race 2 but it didn’t get any worse as the race went on. I thought that if I could get a break, I could win and so I just put my head down in the last five laps. I’m really happy for Ducati and for the thousands of Ducati fans here today”.

Colin Edwards - "I did everything I could to beat Bayliss but races at Monza are always going to be about the last lap, I thought I'd done enough and even tried blocking Troy on the run down to the final corner but he got a good draught on me, there was nothing I could do. After the disaster we suffered in Japan two weeks ago it was nice to be there challenging for a win again. In the second race I was just looking to be in a good position on the last lap but then I lost the tow to Troy with about four laps to go and that was me finished. I'll take a couple of second places and move onto the next round. We proved this weekend that the VTR Honda is strong and the Michelin tyres are working well."

Tady Okada - "Pier-Francesco Chili crashed and I think there was dirt and dust on the circuit from his crash, I hit that and highsided. I'm very disappointed. This is my first race at Monza and I was feeling comfortable in fifth place and, at that stage of the race, believed I had every chance of winning.  I was hoping for a podium finish but after crashing in the first race I'll take fourth. While I was in third I was losing ground to Yanagawa and Chili at the end of the race when the rear tyre started to move around a little and I lost traction. My left shoulder's a bit sore from the highside in the first race but I'm happy to leave here with a fourth and look for better results at Donington Park in two weeks."

Neil Hodgson - “I was so close, yet so far, It was frustrating, because I felt everything was working really well in the first race and I was scraping for the lead. For the first time this season, I had a good chance of finishing on the podium. Dunlop have given me a newly-constructed front tyre, which I’m feeling really comfortable with. Now I just want to concentrate on Donington and turn my luck around so that I can continue to climb the championship table.”

Pierfrancesco Chili - "Today, I really believed that I could win or get on the podium so it was a big disappointment to get hit from behind and crash in the first race. My first thought was to get back on the bike and carry on, but the marshals were slow in helping me start the bike and I lost a lot of time. I was dead last, but I put my head down and just thought about finishing with some points. For race two, we changed the setup on the bike. It felt even better then yesterday afternoon. It was perfect, but it was better. I tried really hard to get on the podium but in the end I finished the race in fifth place. We have made a lot of progress on the bike this weekend and I am pleased we have shown how competitive we can be. "

Stephane Chambon "I'm happy with today’s race since it allowed me to get my best result of the season. In Race One, I kept out of trouble and just tried to ride hard for the eighteen laps. In the second race, I had some problems with grip and felt I couldn't accelerate as hard as I wanted to. Overall, I am pleased with the weekend’s work and I am sure that now that we have a good bike setup we will do even better at Donington."

Ruben Xaus - “In the first race I came out far too fast from the Roggia chicane, probably hit the kerb too hard and the bike went away from me at the front, In the second race I didn’t get a very good start and another rider dropped some oil, which went on my visor so I had to slow right down. Then I pushed too hard and used up the brake pads. Overall I’m pretty pleased with the weekend but I think I have to learn how to do the Superpole. That won’t take long however, it’s just a question of time”.

Regis Laconi - "During the Race 1 first half, It was difficult to brake aggressively due the full tank, then I tried to make me up with two Kawasaki using my slipstream. They passed me and I waited the end of the race to try to pass them again, but during the last lap I lost grip going into the "Parabolica" and I couldn't turn on the throttle full speed. For the second race I set up a different gearing and I had a really good start, but after, it was really a bloody brawl of riders. It was very difficult to make me up position. Any way I'm satisfied about this week-end, after a difficult beginning on Friday everything was working better. Now I'm waiting Donington, a well known track".

Akira Yanagawa - “I know the bike is really fast in a straight line and now it is much better in every other area so I’m very happy to finally make the podium here. This is a new start to the season for me and I am so happy to have two podium finishes this weekend. My bike was really fast, but it wanted to go one way and I wanted it to go the other way, so this was a bit of a battle.”

Gregorio Lavilla - "If I had known I was battling for a podium then I probably would have tried to pass Akira, but I didn’t want to take my team-mate out. I’m so happy to just finish this race with some good points.”

Ben Bostrom - “I really wanted to take the start but the doctors advised me not to because my right knee was far too swollen, It’s a real pity because I was on the front row of the grid and I was sure I could have got some points in the second race. I’ll be back at Donington”.

James Toseland - “I was really geared up for a good weekend, I was taken out at the first corner in race one, but managed to remount my GSE Ducati. The cooling system and a footpeg were broken after the crash, so in the end I had to retire. I was hoping get some points in race two, but I didn’t have the best start. I tried to make up ground but ended up falling off at Parabolica. I’ve been happy with my riding this weekend. More than anything, I’m disappointed that I missed out on championship points.”

Troy Corser - "I'm very disappointed not to have scored any points today, when really I should've been on the podium twice. In the first race I was going into the chicane when Chili and I touched and down we both went. I think he got in too deep and then tried to turn the bike late and that's why I hit him. I thought about picking the bike up and carrying on but the left side was badly damaged and it would've been pointless to even try and get back into it. In the second race I was in a pack chasing the leaders and things were going OK, but then I felt something didn't feel right at the rear. It felt like the rear tyre was destroyed or bits had come off, so I had to pull into the pits. When I came to s atop in the garage and looked at the rear tyre, it looked OK - there were no bits off. But when we put it on the balance machine, the tyre was out of balance. No points today is a disaster as far as I am concerned. But sometimes you get days like today and just have to accept it. What we've got to do now is get back to winning ways in the next round at Donington."
