2001 - Round 5 - Monza - Race 1 report

| Bayliss starts from pole
but Edwards was quickest in morning warm-up.
During tyre testing
after Sugo Broc Parkes cracked a couple of ribs and is not fit to
race.
Bayliss got the holeshot and led through the chicane, Hodgson is looking aggressive, a whole heap of riders came down in the middle to the rear of the field in a bit of a domino effect. Bayliss, Hodgson, Edwards is the leading trio. 3 wide into a corner, when they came out Edwards was in front, Bayliss back in front less than a kilometre later. This looks set to be a fantastic race, as Monza always provides. Hodgson now in front, Edwards and Bayliss side-by-side. Xaus is 4th. Bayliss back in front at the end of the back straight, side by side with Edwards down the main straight. Bostrom crashed in the parabolica and looks a little hurt but is walking about. Corser just set the fastest lap before ending up in the kitty litter after out-braking himself and hitting Chili in the process but the Italian remains upright. Bayliss is having grip problems and lost a lot of ground on Edwards and Hodgson but is screwing the Ducati hard to get right back with them. Okada into the dirt, will anything ever go right for Tady? Hodgson back in front, now Edwards again, Xaus through on Bayliss and starting to get on terms with Hodgson and Edwards. Bayliss fighting back through on Xaus and Hodgson, this is allowing Edwards to escape a little. Xaus is great to watch, even if he does look way too tall for the Ducati when his legs come out under braking. The 3 men up front are now Edwards, Bayliss and Xaus. Hodgson is losing touch a little and has dropped a couple of tenths over the leading trio. Bayliss hits the front! Xaus slipstreaming Edwards, draws alongside at the end of the straight and goes through. Xaus maybe slowing Edwards a little though, this could be good for Bayliss. Now Edwards' turn to slipstream Xaus, and does exactly the same move Xaus did the lap before. Edwards has now gapped Xaus and is right on terms with Bayliss, a late braking move in to a corner coming soon... End of the straight and Edwards pulls alongside and takes the inside line into the first chicane and hits the front. Edwards trying to make a break and wicking the SP2 up out of the turns but Bayliss is still right with him but Edwards is the fastest man on the track right now. It is a battle of two now, Xaus and Hodgson are now seconds behind the leading duo of Edwards and Bayliss. Through the speed trap the Honda had 13kph over the Ducati. Edwards has pulled a few tenths now. Bayliss right with Edwards again, end of the front straight, late brakes but holds it all together through the chicane to take the lead. He looks smoother than Edwards now for the first time, Colin is trying hard and sliding a lot but using the slides to good effect to get around the track. The Ducati ties itself in knots on the way into the main straight, Edwards takes the lead into the chicane with 5 laps to run. Bayliss does look more settled under brakes than the American though. Exiting Ascari Bayliss just had a HUGE moment which bucked him in the seat a little and this has given the American a small break but Bayliss right back with him in half a lap. This is going to be interesting... I am thinking of that infamous final turn coming together between Chili and Fogarty some years ago.... Side by side into the chicane but Edwards has the line, these guys are running nose-to-tail. Bayliss is Edwards' shadow at the moment. Xaus still in third with Hodgson 4th, hold that Hodgson in the dirt with Xaus, they must have had a coming together when fighting for position. Xaus was the man in front of Hodgson so I would guess that the British champion may have been the man at fault. Xaus is gutted. 2 laps to run - Edwards still in the lead but Bayliss still right with him, his could all end in tears, we just had 3rd and 4th take each other out lets hope it does not happen with Edwards and Bayliss. Troy lost a lot of ground through the fast back section but regains it again a couple of corners later. Edwards is smoother, more in control and making no mistakes. End of the front straight in the final lap and Bayliss does not challenge Edwards there which is maybe a strategic move he is waiting until the final couple of turns to make his move. Side by side on the back straight, rub leathers, Troy goes through and takes the win. What a race!
